It IS what I thought it might be.
I guess they didn't bother reading it in the context of the posts around it, or that Neverfly obviously wasn't insulted, since HE understood the context.

Fools.

That would have a certain delicious irony to it, wouldn't it?

I looked over at the BAUT threads and I have no idea why you were banned.

And let me say there are all kinds of things that are regulated in automobiles and are not negotiable, such as license plates and safety glass and air bags. We don't get to opt out of those.

I once hit a cattle truck with a 1977 Mustang. He pulled out in front of me and when I went to pass him, he turned to the left in front of me. I hit the middle of the cattle truck at about 50 mph. The truck flipped and went into the ditch and my Mustang went from 50 to zero in an instant and then rolled onto its top. If I hadn't been wearing my seatbelt, I'd have gone through the windshield. As it was, I had a bruise from my left shoulder to my right hip from the belt catching me.

I am a believer in seatbelts.

I didn't wade through the whole of the thread, so I don't know if this was mentioned, but antipathy to wearing seatbelts has caused collateral fatalities to children via inadvertent activation of passenger-side airbags. (As US citizens largely won't wear seatbelts, US airbags are designed to protect an unrestrained adult, who may weigh 300lbs. This means that they have to be large, so deploying them quickly enough involves considerable force - lethal force to a child in the wrong place at the wrong time.) In the EU and other countries where seatbelt wearing is more prevalent and/or enforced, airbags only have to cushion the occupant's head, so they are smaller and deploy less violently.

And when dealing with people all over the planet it's important to keep in mind that they might have entirely different values to us, but equally valid ones. In one case at BAUT, a poster used what, to him, was a mildly amusing expression, but in my country the same or similar, while fairly uncommon, is a hell of an insult and usually voiced in a derogatory way. I couldn't understand his "attack" and he couldn't understand the forcefulness of my reply. We sorted it out by personal message, but it was a good example of how a simple and well-meant wisecrack can cause a furore.

It's best to stick to plain language and avoid jargon, jokes, ambiguity, figures of speech, and terminology that is limited to a small area. I've often noticed that Kiwis and Aussies here mostly avoid using their own jargon -- nobody else would understand them if they did.

That's why most of your modern US cars have an off switch for the passenger-side airbag.

You totalled a '77 Mustang? That's a crying shame.

But flowerly language, jargon, jokes and in-jokes, ambiguity, figures of speech and unnusual turns of phrase are some of the most entertaining parts of internet forums.

According to classic Mustang enthusiasts, there was no 1977 Mustang. The '74 to '78 Mustang IIs are not loved by the Mustang community.

I've owned three of them over the years -- a standard '77 (green), a '77 Cobra (black and gold) and a '78 King Cobra (burnt orange). The '77 Cobra was my favorite and I put a lot of miles on it. It was the green standard Mustang II that met its end by cattle truck. I still drive a Mustang, but the Cobra and King Cobra are long gone.

In New Zealand wearing of seatbelts has been law for over 20 years, front and back.

Anyone that doesn't wear one is a, as our advertising campaigns say, "A Bloody Idiot"

BTW Jason, you might find that JREF is more to your taste than BAUT. It has it's own politics forum and the rules tend to be a little more lax that BAUT.

Fraak! What's goin' on here? Go away for awhile, come back, and I hardly know anybody.
Welcome to the board sniffy, dragonblaster, logger, fiveonit....I'm sure there are others...
Nice to see new blood here.
Gee, my Art thread in on page four in General Discussion. Gotta bump it up a bit. ;D

I've just been wanderin in a few times lately, cause I joined a SAHB forum and check the Blackhawks forum.

Maybe someone can direct these new members to the training facilities for Disinfo Agents - or at least give them a phone number? I would do it, but I don't want to get into trouble again with my supervisor. They didn't like the tea thing...
