Conservative pundits are going to fall all over themselves trying to frame Barack Obama as "elite" and as something despicable. Here is David Brooks from The New York Times giving it a go:
"Obama‘s problem is he doesn‘t seem like a guy who can go into an Applebee‘s salad bar and people think he fits in naturally there. "

I suppose some Applebees somewhere might have a salad bar. I'm more suprised to hear that the New York Times has printed anything a "conservative pundit" might say. And Obama is rich - there's no getting around that. Of course, McCain is pretty well-off too.

What's wrong with being elite? Don't we want leaders who are more intelligent than average? Don't we want leaders who got the best education they could? In short, don't we want leaders we can look up to? Jefferson was elite. Roosevelt (both of 'em, really) was elite. Jackson wasn't, and look how much he screwed up the country!

We want leaders we can look up to, but we also want leaders who can understand our wants and needs and who are approachable. Marie Antoinette is the ur-example of what the populace thinks of an out-of-touch ruler.

I want an intelligent leader - someone who can actually form and elucidate some original thoughts, and who is willing to actually admit mistakes and learn from them. I don't give a **** about whether he's someone I want to have a beer with.
And, frankly, I hope said leader doesn't think Applebee's constitutes a fine dining experience.

And yet I'm still shocked every time I hear the words "conservative" and "New York Times" together.

Hamas has apparently withdrawn its endorsement of Barack Obama:
Quote:
"Obama's comments have confirmed that there will be no change in the U.S. administration's foreign policy on the Arab-Israeli conflict," Hamas official Sami Abu Zuhri told Reuters in Gaza. "The Democratic and Republican parties support totally the Israeli occupation at the expense of the interests and rights of Arabs and Palestinians," he said. "Hamas does not differentiate between the two presidential candidates, Obama and McCain, because their policies regarding the Arab-Israel conflict are the same and are hostile to us, therefore we do have no preference and are not wishing for either of them to win."
Oh well, it's not like they could have voted for him anyway.
