In the NORAD doctrine it states that their aerospace mission is detecting and responding to any (air-breathing) threat the North America.... Does anyone know what that means as far as making a stipulation about (air-breathing)? As apposed to what? I was under the impression they tracked everything, including satellites.

I believe the United States Space Command has the responsibility to track spaceborne objects.

They publish the orbital data for unclassified satellites on this site. You need to register to use it.

From what I have read, Prior to 9/11 they tracked any activty over the North Atlantic, The North Pacfic, The Artic Circle over Alaska and Canada, and yes, space objects. Since 9/11 they have added traffic over the North American contenient.

The paragraph in the docuement in which this is stated is more of a "Hooyah" , rouse the troops style of statement. They are NOT limiting themselves to enemies who breath air or machines that have a living being at the controls.

Air breathing, as in aircraft/cruise missiles. The other threat is missiles (exo-atmospheric), which are detected with SPACECOM assets (tho no real functioning defense capability there as yet).
