 Was Jesus Christ God?
« Thread Started on Feb 11, 2008, 8:40pm »

I pose this question because it keeps coming up as an aside in the other religious posts. I don't think a thread has been devoted to this before - correct me if I am wrong.

I voted NO.

Of course, I will assume that all votes are 'in my opinion' (or yours). I don't think anyone has to start doing biblical or historical research to back their vote, unless you want to.

I'll have to pick none of the above.

'As he ever has judged,' said Aragorn. 'Good and ill have not changed since yesteryear; nor are they one thing among Elves and Dwarves, and another among Men. It is a man's part to discern them, as much in the Golden Wood as in his own house.'

I find it rather pointless, most of the Non-Christians on the board will vote no, don't know, or don't care. Most or the Christians will vote yes, or simply not vote. What is it intended to prove?

Well of course he was - he was part of the holy trinity - The Father, the Son, and the holy spirit. We have also been given the bible which does pretty much say that he was.
I don't really understand the question really after all everybody knows that Jesus was the son of God and God at the same time, it's so obvious. Where is your faith people?

The real question is will everybody who doesn't believe go to hell?

Yes.

Well they're going to feel really stupid burning and suffering for eternity in nowhere land now aint they.

Sorry I'm being silly, but this sort of question is just begging for extremists on both end of the scale to go crazy (or not as seems to be the case).

Just for the record I am what I call a worried agnostic. Logic telling me nothing exists but worrying about the concept of ceasing to exist once dead. And hopeing to God that he exists so I continue to exist after I cease to exist! Huh? I just confused myself.

Hey Trevor, this is a serious topic to some people.

I believe Trevor is being serious. I went through a similar period.

As to whether the poll is pointless or not, I'd suggest that if Ginnie is interested in the results, then it is not pointless. If you don't want to participate, then by all means do not participate.

I had to pick "none of the above" because none of the answers really satisfy my position.
If you had said "the Son of God" in the poll question, Ginnie, I would have answered yes without reservations.
Saying "yes - Jesus Christ was God" would imply that I believe Jesus and God the Father are the same person, which I don't, yet answering "no - Jesus Christ was not God" would imply that I thought there was nothing divine about Jesus, which is also not the case.
"Maybe", "don't know", and "couldn't care less" also don't work for me.

Even when he said "Sorry I'm being silly."? ;)

I wasn't offended, just pointing out that it's a touchy subject. If Dead Hoosiers had been around she would be quoting scripture by now.

Are you authentically interested in understanding the LDS belief or just looking for points to argue about?

Appologies Jason,

I was serious in my opinion but I tend to make light of theistic subjects as a defence mechanism due to my serious fear of just, well not existing anymore.

I would, as wdmundt, be very interested in your answer.

As for my position I will try to explain without joking around.

From a religious and biblical side we have been given a pretty strict set of rules to follow. To me they are common sense, i.e. The Ten commandments and the messages of love and forgiveness given by Jesus. Now if everybody in the world followed these we truly would have a safe and happy world, without famine or war. I think personally that Jesus existed my belief is that this one person whos teachings, really on the whole, divert from human nature influenced so much of the world that he could not be a myth. My personal opinion. Just as a black hole cannot be viewed by anything than it's own effect on the areas of space around it, if you will.

Secondly many people (some of whom I know) have had spritual experiences, for a better word, which cannot be explained with science. And I don't mean psychics and the like.

On the other hand there is much in science which does explain how things work in the physical world and the more I learn the more and more I move away from the theistic way of thinking.

Now I will add that I personally believe that science is agnostic in its self and that often much of what is found in science as evidence is a belief more that hard proof. It's the best fit at the time until something better comes along.

Im sorry to hijack the thread but I hope I have given you some idea of the dilema I face. And why I still hope in the existence of God just so I go somewhere when I die. And isn't that promise of eternal life what converted millions of people around the world in the first place?

Once again, it seems I have started a dumb poll. I don't think enough about them before I post them I guess. ;D

I don't mean this question to raise friction between members here - maybe personal beliefs should remain that way. I certainly didn't mean for Jason to get into another debate where he has to defend his faith.

On the other hand, we're big boys and girls here so anyone can choose to respond or not to. I think PW made the best point so far BTW, because when I read his post I agreed with him.
