Hello, Jay. I am having a discussion on "superlights" and washed out shadows with greenmagoos on YouTube, and he compared a clip made with a "superlight" to a clip in the documentary. The fragment of the clip he's comparing it to is found here, at the 6 minute mark. My question is: How large was the light used in the particular clip referred to before? Thanks in advance and stuff, BertL.

You can see the light in the clip. It's what's called a fresnel light in the trade. It's about 20 inches (60 cm or so) in diameter and is rated at 18,000 watts. That's its electrical consumption, not its radiance.
For some shots looking back at the truck, we used another 1,200 watt fresnel with barndoors to keep it from spilling onto the scene. Without that light you couldn't have seen the truck well enough.

Out of interest, we also used to use Fresnel lenses in our Sea King Mk 50 / 50A radars. You had to look directly above the centrepoint of the screen, otherwise it would blur and distort.
These days there are radars installed which aren't so fussy....
