It is an odd mix. I'd suggest IDW is proud of being a self-taught physicist (which, unfortunately, he achieves by skipping most of those boring textbooks and making up his own version).
He demands respect from those with degrees, claiming to have an equal or better understanding of the sciences. That has always been his major reason to seek out Jay; he needs the validation that comes from Jay's recognition of him. Engaging him in argument -- one-on-one if at all possible -- proves that he is Jay's equal.
As an odd flip side he is much more dismissive of those without degrees. He's worse than any degreed person I've met professionally or socially (with the exception of Yale grads!) IDW has words of scorn for a lesser degree, lesser degree program ("A doctorate in Environmental Studies from UC Irvine? That's not even a science degree!")
Which I find vastly amusing. Somehow Jay Utah or Phil Plait or (insert long list of people here!) can communicate basic concepts readily enough. But IDW, the self-taught genius, tells other posters in a thread "You couldn't possibly understand what we are talking about so just go away."

I seem to recall the word "Retards" cropping up in just about every post he made on the infamous GLP Apollo Hoax thread. Compared to that, his BAUT thread was almost coherent.
But only when compared to that.

His attitude seems to be, "I'm better than any of those eggheads but I got screwed and never got my chance". But this is Arnold J. Rimmer from Red Dwarf!

*groans* How about he takes it elsewhere to a 'real science board' (that is not an Apollo debunk site), and lets see how far he gets?

He has. I've visited the train wreck he's been in on some strictly physics boards. (For a while I used as a sig a quote from a reply he got; "Tautologies contain no physics.")
I am small enough to admit to a certain glee when he is kindly given the Amazon url to a basic textbook or two. But actually it is more fun to watch the "biter bit" when he runs into a etherist on one of those boards!

actually a physics board i went to recently has pretty well much banned Apollo hoax & 9/11 discussions - probably because it's been discussed ad nauseam

I have a feeling that IDW has a large streak of narcisim in him as well. He (like many of his ilk) sees himself as an unrecognised genius and gets rather upset by people that refuse to accept him as such. (ie tell him that he's wrong.)

(snip)...accurate summary of IDW threads...(snip) I would just add that backing out of (running away from) a debate claiming that " he got what he came for" is also a common thing for him.

It seemed like a setup at the get go. IDW baited everyone, hook, line and sinker. Because the BAUT forum members are such gentlemen/gentlewomen and believers that humans are inherently good, they gave him the benefit of a doubt.
I just joined the BAUT forum and recognized a lot of names. Are there other members here also registered there but under different names?

I'm registered at BAUT under this same nick. And yes, many of us have enough experience with IDW to have been skeptical from the start.

I'm Bob B. both here and at BAUT. I also use the same avatar. And yes, many of us have enough experience with IDW to have been skeptical from the start. Other than a couple short posts, I stayed out of that whole discussion because I expected it wouldn't be very long before we saw the old IDW. I saw too much of the guy a couple years ago to believe him capable of such a metamorphosis.

Wow. You go away for a couple of weeks and come back to a massive IDW Deja Vu- although he does seem a lot more calm these days- and he now believes in protons- I think that was one of the particles he had a sneaking suspicion were also hoaxed... still- wow!

I'm Gillianren pretty much everywhere. (Which isn't many places.)
It was like having a legend appear among us. I'd heard tell, but I'd never seen.
Actually, I have a certain amount of pity for IDW and his ilk, if he's the sort of person I'm thinking of. You see, I have a neighbour like that. He's not stupid, but he's not half as smart as everyone else in our group, either. The worst is, before he got into our social circle, he was probably used to being the smartest person in the group. (He's average, but high average, if that makes any sense. Maybe 105, maybe 110. In a group where the IQ tops at about 165. If IDW has the same problem, this explains much.

Interesting speculation Gillianren.
Then again I spent most of my working life with people (much) cleverer than me, and most of my personal life with people, if not cleverer (some are), more socially able than me. And I've never entertained for a moment the possibility that the Apollo program was a hoax.
That's by the by. One question about which I always wonder is whether an HB sincerely believes in the hoax (and this is not necessarily concerned with IDW of whom I know nothing apart from his brief appearance at BAUT).
To me the whole hoax thing is so obviously what my Australian friends would call a pile of dingoes kidneys (and I would call pernicious drivel) that I have real trouble accepting that any HB isn't a troll. I've been taken severely to task on BAUT for saying this, so I don't any more, but I do confess the temptaion.
