hello just a question which is probably a bit silly so forgive me if it is,but how did the numbering system for Apollo missions work? I mean, why was there an Apollo 8 and 10 but not a 9 or 7 etc?

There was a 9 and 7. Apollo 7 was the first manned mission and tested the Command Module in Earth orbit. Apollo 9 was the first manned test of the Lunar Module in Earth orbit. The Apollos prior to 7 were unmanned tests.

Just for the record. Apollo 1 was originally named AS-204
Although Planned, there was no Apollo 2 or 3 as they were never actually flown.
Apollo 4 was the first unmanned Saturn V test flight Apollo 5 was the first unmanned LM test flight. Incidently this mission used the same booster as Apollo 1 Apollo 6 was the second unmanned Saturn V test flight Apollo 7 was the first Manned CSM Test flight done in Earth orbit Apollo 8 was the first test flight to the Moon Apollo 9 was the first Manned LM test flight, done in Earth orbit. Apollo 10 was the second manned LM test flight, done in Lunar orbit.

I think a more important question is ... why did Adam Ant pick Apollo 9 to write a song about?
