Just been struggling with a new 3d render engine...found to my surprise that they implemented a "fresnel" effect (strength of reflection changes with view angle) to be driven entirely by the index of refraction of the material.
After some reading this did make some sort of sense.
But I'm so used to thinking of "index of refraction" as being applied to light moving from one material to another. Are the Fresnel Equations (showing reflection and refraction within the same formulae) truly the best way to deal with reflective surfaces in a 3d render? Am I being silly in thinking that surface micro-structure might play a more important role in reflection effects than the refraction index inside the material?
