Was just reading an old printing of this novel, and was amused to note that in the acknowledgments, Clarke credits Hoagland with being the first to propose life might exist in the Europan oceans.
Clarke also claims the Apollo 8 crew considered reporting that they'd discovered a strange black monolith as they returned from their far side circuit, but they chickened out...

Just imagine the fun we'd be having if they hadn't...

The Bad Astronomer speaks of Hoagland's claim here. Estentially, Clark gave Hoagland too much credit, possibly from reading an article in Star and Sky.

Hogland’s claim seems to fall into that great "so what" category. The real science is the discovery that the elements that might support life are found on Europa. Once that is done, any yahoo can speak up to suggest that life exists there. It doesn’t really mean anything. Since Hogland didn’t do any science on the environment of Europa, then he is just a yahoo. He also hasn’t done any science in the search for the existence of life there either, but surely he will be the first to associate his name with any positive findings.

I suppose one could do a search on Clarke's email to find out what it is.

I think you may have problems finding Arthur's e-mail address - he's never published it - and was quoted as saying its a "fairly closely guarded secret" Remember he's about to celebrate his 90th birthday, and dosen't enjoy the best of health these days .. so answering e-mails about Hoagland of all people probably isn't highest on his list of things to do! You could always go to Downtown colombo , like I did , I found his house , but was too chicken to ring the bell! .. No I didn't go all the way to Sri Lanka to seek him out .. I may be sad , but not that sad!

Perhaps one could write him via "snail mail".
I suppose if Clarke did publish his email address, it'd be filled to the brim every week.

Is it that big a deal? The book was published twenty years ago.
