Yeah, everyone who joins the armed forces has the wonderful opportunity to get stinkin rich.(dripping sarcasm) I wasn't talking about the peasants, the generals are well paid for killing for their masters.

Thats how it used to work in the British Army, only a wealthy man could afford to be an officer.

Yeah. How long ago did that change?
(For what it's worth, my boyfriend wouldn't spend the money to be an officer regardless. He's too cheap.)

The practice was abolished in the British Army in 1871. Edited to add: This was a part of the Cardwell Reforms that were carried out after investigations into the poor performance of the Armed Forces in the Crimean War.

Certain Aristocratic families went (and still go) to the same regiments generation after generation.
it must be noted that the Aristocracy only go to the right regiments. No gentleman would ever joing an Infantry regiment. Its Cavelry all the way
