That has to do with one of the central premises of the show (and the original '70s version) - that Earth and the Colonials are somehow related. They call themselves colonists, after all. as i understand it the earth is supposed to be the lost 13th colony .. so in their story the earth was colonised a long time ago by these guys who went off on their own and lost contact with them .. so how long ago in earth time did these guys get here ? on a more practical note .. i can understand that it would be more expensive for the show to redesign everything

The producers of the show have said that they made conscious decisions to make the Galactica universe like our own. They wanted to make it more immediate for the viewers and allow closer identification with the characters. The scene from the mini-series where Roslin is sworn in as the new President of the Colonies on Colonial One, for instance, is supposed to remind us of Lindon Johnson being sworn in on Air Force One after the Kennedy assassination.
