Petrol (gasoline) in Canberra is about $1.20/litre. Given that the US gallon is about 3.8 litres, and the Little Aussie Battler buys about 82 US cents, that makes petrol here about US$3.70-$3.75/gallon.
My car gets about 600 kilometres on a 40 litre tank, making its efficiency about 35mpg (American gallons).
I'm thinking of buying a motor scooter for some of my journeys, but people warn about the danger of scooters. I"m still not sure, but 2 kilometres is too far to walk to the shops (especially when you count the hill), but really too close to justify driving...

Thirty-five more cents (US) and we're there, give or take.

You can get away with riding only bicycles in Holland - the country is practically made for them. It doesn't work nearly as well in Utah. nor in most of Canada very much including where I am.

I Houston we are about as flat as The Netherlands, but most of the year riding a bike any distance will just make you oderiferous.

I manage a filling station (in the USA, nothing but gasoline/petrol), and the biggest b*tches seem to be those with the biggest vehicles with the biggest displacement engines. While I have sympathy for the odd customer with the beasty Yankmobile full of kids, or someone who really needs a heavy duty truck for their business , I have none for the dude or gal who's using it as their solo daily driver...and they far outnumber the folks (at least in my anecdotal experience) who seem to be driving them for need.

Hitchiking is pretty much illegal here in Utah. And not very safe either - for either the one doing the hitching or the one picking them up.

Ted Bundy used to hunt around here by picking up hitchhikers, among other methods. He and Ann Rule once had a conversation, while they worked together on a suicide hotline, about how dangerous hitchhiking could be for young girls. (I understand that it's what they have instead of public transit in Hawaii, though.) Ted Bundy, it should be said, agreed that hitchhiking was a dangerous thing to do.

Here in Sweden, prices are about $6.5/US gallon right now... I ride an old Volvo, but I'm planning to switch to a hybrid as soon as I can afford one. I mostly drive in the city, so I'll probably save quite a bit.

I received a chain letter advising how to drive down the price of gas by causing gas wars as follows:
Buy all the gas you need, just don't buy it from Exxon or Chevron (American's biggest oil companies?). They would then have to drop their prices. This advice supposedly from a former big-oil co. exec.

Snopes is your friendBy the way, I work for one of Mobil-Exxon's largest compeditors, so if I was to be biased here, it's be towards a boycott as that'd help the company I work for.

Our gas prices are starting to come down a little; the cheap gas station down the street is back to $3.33 a gallon.
