Take a look at this building complex. When and where do you think it was built? Normally I want to get the views of knowledgeable people but as this is a rhetorical question I only want to here from “ignoramuses” if you know the answer please refrain from responding for now.

A couple weeks ago I did a huge post about this place on another, completely unrelated board, and you're tellin me I gotta wait to re-post it here? Dammit... it was good too... Cz

Built before 1933? Could be anywhere. The swastika as a symbol has been documented in India, China, in Mediterranean cultures and Old Norse. Used by Buddhists (referred to as "Seal on Buddha's heart), in Tibet, by Jainists (the four levels of existence) , even by Gnostic's, BTW Carl Sagan, in his book COMET, has an explanation why diverse cultures around the world used the swastika. An ancient Chinese document of types of comets shows a 'spinning type comet' that looks almost exactly like a swastika. He speculates that many people across vast areas of the globe would have seen the comet in the sky and took it from there - heavenly objects were revered and/or feared by many ancient cultures and would have been incorporated into their religious belief system. I don't consider myself an ignoramus but since I don't know when or where your picture is from I didn't give anything away.

I think the only “ignoramuses" are the ones planning to spend NZ$790k to fix it.

I said “ignoramuses” in jest, which is why I put it in quotes. I had never seen or heard of it till about ago.

I have no idea where that is built. I know from experience one should not try to guess the location of a building by its shape. I mean, the Sydney Opera House isn't built on some futuristic sci-fi planet either.

It makes you wonder if the swastika will ever lose its association with the Nazis or if it has been permanently ruined for any other purpose.

It's probably ineradicable, despite the previous widespread use of the device. Even if you see a "left-handed" swastika, the (probably accurate) assumption would be that it was drawn by a particularly ignorant neo-nazi rather than a hindu.

If, as stated in the article, the shape was only noticed at the ground-breaking stage, one has to wonder who was involved with drawing up the plans. It reminds me of the quote from an English couple who had a German ex-PoW working for them as a gardener until he could be repatriated after WWII: "He was a wonderful chap, worked very hard, and we got on famously, but the springtime after he finally went home, our crocuses came up spelling out 'Heil Hitler'."

Ok now that someone has posted about the identity of the building, I can finally post my thoughts on it and the story. I posted this one a different board about 2 weeks ago in response to a post containing a link to this article: www.switched.com/2007/09/26/google-earth-uncovers-swastika-shaped-government-building/This kinda stuff interests me a bit so I had to look for myself. You can find the buildings by searching for Coronado, California on maps.google.com (its right by San Diego) then scrolling a bit to the South East I admit... looks like a Swastika to me too. Weird. Was the designer a Neo-Nazi? Who knows. Obviously the whole "we noticed it too late" thing is a bunch of crap. Someone in some Government office probably saw it, noticed the resemblance and thought it'd be a kick to have a military institution shaped like a Swastika. Cool... sense of humor and irony... I get it. I do, however, have issues with the original article that is linked from the story that was posted: www.news8online.com/features/special_assignment/story.php?id=711331. First off, all the pics shown are rotated about 45 degrees to the right. No biggy, I can deal. Makes for a more convincing "story" i suppose, but whatever... 2. The article goes on to say that the two buildings to the left look like planes attacking the Swastika building... uhm.... yeeaahhh.... if those planes had somehow escaped from the b-17 Bomber game I used to play on my sister's Intellivision about 25 years ago!!... I mean... yeah, ok, I can sorta see the resemblance, and definitely the placement of them tends to make you scratch your head a bit... but really.... sheeesh.... 3. They then say that the "planes" are maybe a foreshadowing of the 9/11 attacks.... ... COME ON!... there's stretching and then there's S T R E T C H I N G... 4. They say the "plane" buildings look like Calvary crosses (the type/style/shape that Christ was apparently nailed to) and that those, taken together with the Swastika building are somehow sending an anti-semetic message.... Calvary Cross ok... there's a resemblance, but I'll bet there's thousands of buildings everywhere that look like that (or close) from the air... 5. (and this is the most ridiculous). They say that the plane/crosses are pointed DIRECTLY at Jerusalem, thereby adding more weight to the whole anti-semetic thing or some other significance. Well, I just had to look... and guess what? THEY'RE NOT EVEN CLOSE! Jerusalem is almost directly East (or West, depending on which way you look at it) from these buildings, while in the un-rotated correct view of the buildings they point almost directly Northeast / Southwest. So... in summary: Swastika building - weird coincidence or funny joke (to some) but harbinger of the Fourth Reich? pfft... no "Plane" buildings and the anti-semetism thing - uhm... riiiiiiight. "Jerusalem Connection" - pure pandering, no truth whatsoever. Cz

They do kind of look like old Atari 2600 graphics...
I can buy the story that no one noticed it was a swastika until too late. I've known a number of engineers who miss something that seems obvious to a new perspective. Have any of these conspiracists figured out that these shapes are good for letting each room have a window?

I heard about this over a year ago. I don't think it is that big of a deal. As mentioned the design does give an efficient use of space to give each room a window. Something that would be more important with a barracks. some people are just too sensitive.
