Sorry if this has already been covered before, but just to let everyone know, orbs that show up in your flash photography are dust, etc. near the camera lens illuminated by the flash, whether its inside or outside. FYI. :-) Comments, question, concerns?

Somewhere, JayUtah showed his examples of "orbs" that he deliberately arranged by stirring up some dust and photographing it with a flash unit. I don't know much about "orbs", but have heard that some folks think they are angels or spirits. One of them was apparently Buddy Holly showing up at a recent Rock 'n' Roll convention in a photo that included the Big Bopper's son. Is it true that they only occur with electronic cameras? I've been a photographer since 1968 but only ever used film, and don't recall the exact explanation for their shape. I've never noticed lit-up dust in the thousands of flash photos I've taken, but that doesn't mean it wasn't there.

I'm thinking maybe it's an effect of high power strobes mounted on the face of the camera, like smaller digital cameras and flash disposables. The blast of light is close enough to the lens that small dust in front of the camera could be illuminated. I've seen it with snapshots at night with snow falling. One flake can blow a whole frame.
Yet another thing, like red eye, that you'll have to work harder to see with a pc-socket sunpack on a handle.

I think there may be something to the idea about the digital cameras... I had not noticed these in ANY pictures I've ever taken until my use of our digital camera a little over a year ago. Yes, the flash is definitely lighting up dust particles fairly close to the lens when this happens. Could be that there are just "that" many more people taking more pics these days, and many are in lower light conditions as well...

I suppose if you could set up a test in an area where people say they take pictures of orbs.
Maybe have the digital cameras and standard film cameras fire at the same time. Try infrared film, and maybe one of those 360 degree camera arrays.
That way if it was a physical object maybe, it would show up consistently across all cameras.
I don't know if anyone has done such a test, it would be interesting to try it.
