I've tended to do no more than skim this debate from time to time. My own view is that it's not religion that's good or bad, it's what people do with it that causes the problems.
I firmly agree with both the skimming and the real point of the comment.

There was a time when I was highly religious. Then, I slowy gave up on my faith. I realize that not only has my situation in life not changed, but also that, on my own, I have more free time.
This is but one reason why I don't believe in a deity of any sort. All we have to go by is what was written down by the preveiling religion for one's region.
I also note that some people can be happy in their faith. But happiness can also be found without religion.
For example, a couple I knew some years ago that did not have any beliefs in religion enjoyed a happy relationship with religion. They seemed to get along more than my own parents do, in that in cases were one makes a big mistake, they don't make cheap insults at each other. I find it ironic that my dad continues to do so, depite undergoing training to be a deacon.
That may have more to do with his upbringing than faith, of course. But to me, it shows that despite being highly religious, it doesn't prevent one from making cheap insults at one's spouse.
