I know there is another similar thread about from a number of months ago, but with tensions rising in Lebanon and with what looks like a new civil war about to break out, I think that even though we often don't agree with her on some topics that we all give her our best thoughts and prayers (for those that believe they work) that she and her family and friends will be safe until this round of fighting passes.
Keep safe and well Lionking.

We sit back comfy in our armchairs reading the paper or watching the news. So be safe indeed.

"Cheer up!" they said, "It could be worse!" So I did, and it was.

My father, a civil engineer, worked in the Middle East for a few years between the wars. He loved Lebanon, and I remember how upset he was when the first troubles began and Beirut changed from such a beautiful place into a war zone. It's a reminder to us all how fragile a thing civilisation is.

I thank you all for your kind words. Now that the fightings ended, I will maybe get back to Beirut tomorrow. Hizbollah did it and turned his weapons towards the inside instead of Israel as if we are Israelis after preaching for years that their weapons are not going to be used against the Lebanese. In case you didn't now what triggered this war, it was because the government took two decisions. The responsible person at the airport didn't remove the camera of spying for HA that was directd on the stage where the 14 March leaders go and come through. There was also a system that could spy on the airplanes and their communications with the airport. In the madness of assassinations against the gov, one should doubt this. So, they took the decision to remove the shiite responsible from the airport. The other decision was the telecommunications system that ow covers 2/3rd of the land. The gov says it is on the account of its money and it was previously 3000 lines but now it became of 99000 lines. Nasrallah considered this a violation of his weapons since they use it to protect their leaders and to communicate during war. The gov didn't intend to touch the weapons, but where the network is on the account of its sovereignty and money, then it has the right to act.
HA suddenly entered Beirut and tried to enter the mountain. Althaugh the leaders of the gov decided to hand in their weapons to the army, the people faught in many places. Now, there is an Arab initiative for solution . The government decided to give the two decisions to the Army that decided to open an investigation about the two issues and take charge accordingly. It did something stupid asking the gov to get back from its decisions. Some say the gov will step back, which will be very humiliating. They shoul say as the army that they insist on investigations and go tll the end and take action according to the investigations like t earmy said and especially that HA agreed on this .. but the issue, I think, is a Syrian-Iranian decision to threaten the gov. I will watch and see if the gov will step back I hope it will not. HA weapons are now a threat for the Lebanese and a strong weapon for Syria to act through. They are very powerful and we are panting for the sovereignty of this country..I hope we can win in the end, but this is a difficult war..a very difficult one indeed. I guess that without bombing Iran afterall, there is no salvation.

Good luck to you, lionking, and I hope that one day the only foreign influence in Lebanon will be tourists, businesspeople, and visiting scholars. I remember a family friend describing her travels there some decades ago, and how beautiful Lebanon was.

That is a pretty sobering statement, if you meant those words as I have read them. I certainly hope that the civil war does not expand to that extent.

Not the civil war will extend, but I am trying to deal with the cause of all that happened. HA is nothing without Syria and Iran.
