Well so far my friend and I are most positive about Learning The World, mainly because it's a recent book (which allows us to compare the views on extraterrestials visiting Earth, from different authors in different times).

How about James Gunn's The Listeners? It's got a similar theme -- message from space -- but good luck finding it.
A similar message-from-space story is the recent Rollback by Robert Sawyer but it's more about the implications of rejuvenation therapy.
Edit to add: Oh, wait, Gunn's American. Well, Sawyer's Canadian -- does the Commonwealth count as British?
