The big difference between this set and the other Apollo sets from spacecraftfilms is the unfortunate inclusion of commentary from TV reporters. (the notable exception being during the 2 Moon walks, thank goodness)
For instance, during the liftoff from the Moon, there is a "commentator" who literally repeats everything the astronauts say. When Al Shepard would inform Houston that everything was a-ok, the commentator would say, "Al Shepard just told Houston that everything is A-ok". And he did this over and over and over again. It was almost like he didn't think the TV audience could here the astronaut transmissions. I know this sounds like a nit pick, but imagine Ms. Weaver's character in Galaxy Quest, and you'll understand how annoying this became very quickly.
Also...a different commentator during the recovery section repeated the words "Apollo Command Module" at least 15-20 times in a 10 minute period.
The video and audio are consistent with the high standards of spacecraft films other sets, so this DVD set is worthwhile to own, but I just don't understand why the need for all this "happy talk".
As I posted in another thread...were these the best tapes available?
This was very difficult to write because I really appreciate what spacecraft films has done...
OK...now that I've bashed this DVD set, allow me to highly recommend 2 other DVD sets from spacecraft films...
X-15 is a wonderful set with some amazing video from those test flights. The on board films from Mike Adams flight will "haunt" me all my life.
Project Mercury I really can't say enough good things about this set. It is wonderfully done. It looks like it was filmed yesterday. The onboard videos are amazing. Also included are complete audio transmissions from selected flights.
I'm looking forward to the release of the Skylab DVD set hopefully with no TV reporter ocmmentary.
