Looking good, but I wonder how the higher-res versions will compare? ;D Bring 'em on!

Geeze. The HBs look like a pack of sore losers right now. Nice to even see footprint tracks. I wonder which HB will be the first to become a bona-fide liar, when the backpeddle on their promise to believe the landings happened if they could just see an image of the remnants on the moon? Do I sound smug? Good. Unfortunately, it's not going to happen. People like Jarrah and co. have too much emotionally and, let's face it, financially, invested in the idea of Apollo being a hoax to turn around and admit they were wrong all along. The arguments will come out about how the LRO pics were faked up because the world was expecting to see the landing sites and NASA just had to put something up to show us. Someone will come out with how they talked to someone who talked to someone who knew someone who worked in the labs and was told to put the fake images together... and the whole shooting match will start over.... Pessimism, or just experience?

Yes but the tide of opinion will begin dimsmissing the HB claims, similar to the face on Mars phenomenon. The hard core crowd can shout as much as they want. Whether they will have the same amount of casual followers now that the images are coming through remains to be seen. I personally doubt it.
But hey, they were the ones calling for the images. We will soon see how true to their word they hold.

I always wanted to see this. It won't convince many people, but I always wanted to see this.

A friend of mine argued about the shape of the shadows, and this is what I told him. First, these are "late lunar afternoon shots", and thus the shadows are cast towards the east, rather than the west (as they were during the day of the landings). And the fact that it's late afternoon, means that the shadows are long. My friend still couldn't believe that was a descent stage shadow. Then I asked him, "So how is it supposed to look like?" and he said "I dunno, how is it supposed to look like?" Then I told him this... "If I can show to you a simulation of the descent stage casting a long eastward shadow on the surface, and you compared the shapes of the shadows, and found out they match, would you then believe me?" And he said "Yes." So here's what I did... I first took a snapshot of a simulated descent stage (quite well detailed 3D model) sitting on the lunar surface at Tranquility Base (exact coordinates, with simulated landmarks as well). Then, I pulled out a bit and took another snapshot, and explained to him the shape of the shadow... There are two "horns" on the shadow, created by the RCS thruster deflector mounts. Why am I emphasizing this? Because, when I pull out further... ...and view the site from directly above, you can actually see those two horns at the eastern end of the long shadow. Now compare the above image with this: I then said to my friend, "Now compare the shadows...pretty close huh." And he was dumbstruck. -RODION

That is outstanding work there!
Would it be okay to post them in other HB forums, showing that's how things should look?

Sure thing, no problem Glad to help out Incidentally, for those curious what sim is this, this is Orbiter: Space Flight Simulator, with an addon called AMSO... www.orbitersim.comwww.acsoft.ch/AMSO/amso.htmlCheers to all! -RODION

Great images. Been waiting for years to see images like these. Can't wait to see them when they're imaged again in the proper 50km orbit.
I'm not seeing too much of a change with most HB's though. A lot seem to be unimpressed. They were probably expecting to see individual foot prints and flags and what not...

They were probably expecting to see individual foot prints and flags and what not... Without once again getting into the issue of the hostile relationship between nylon and 20 years of unfiltered sunlight, what would one expect a flag viewed from directly overhead to look like?

I'm not seeing too much of a change with most HB's though. A lot seem to be unimpressed. They were probably expecting to see individual foot prints and flags and what not... Ever since the day I've encountered my first HB, I realized that these people will only be convinced that the landings did really happen, if they get a "free ticket to the moon" from NASA. I'm somewhat convinced now that these HBers harbor a subconscious and secret desire to go to the moon themselves. And once they get there, probably utter something like "Ok, NASA is not lying to me because I got this free ticket to the moon, and now that I'm here, it really is fantastic, it's real...I see the flag and the footprints...blah blah blah". But then again, knowing HB's, perhaps the possibility of them actually getting to the moon, and saying something like "I deny what I see, this is not real, it's a virtual reality projection in my head...I'm not on the moon, and these are not Apollo equipment...I'm being brainwashed by the government" is also not an impossibility ;D -RODION

I've played with the earlier stages of the Apollo missions, but not got as far as the landings yet.

Am I the only one feeling sort of bubbly and giddy about those photos? Definitely not!! I went through all the high res pics and found the lander stage in each one, now have to dig out decent EVA maps to see what's where. Landed at Tranquility last night with Orbiter/AMSO too (nice pics rodion) after relearning the autopilot. Gee, wonder when JW will come out with a video arguing about landmarks and craters in the latest photos?? They're fantastic pics...really wonderful stuff.
