Just what it says...
I'm pleased to report that finally, we've won Gold on home ground. No gold in Montreal in '76 or Calgary in '88. Its funny too, that the silver went to Australia - to a Canadian who moved there when he was 15, started up an internet spamming company and made a fortune. He didn't show much emotion on the podium!
The highlight of these games to me will be of course the Ice Hockey competition. Anything less than Gold for Canada will be a disaster. There will be tough competitors - the Russians, Swedes, Czechs, and even the U.S. could win this. I think it will all come down to who has the most spectacular goaltending, except for Russia - they have a lot of goalscoring potential.
The Medal Standings right now: (Country, Gold, Silver, Bronze, TOTAL Medal count)
1 United States MEDAL WINNERS 1 2 3 6 2 GER Germany MEDAL WINNERS 1 3 0 4 3 FRA France MEDAL WINNERS 2 0 1 3 3 CAN Canada MEDAL WINNERS 1 1 1 3 5 KOR South Korea MEDAL WINNERS 1 1 0 2 5 NOR Norway MEDAL WINNERS 0 1 1 2 5 ITA Italy MEDAL WINNERS 0 0 2 2 8 NED Netherlands MEDAL WINNERS 1 0 0 1 8 SUI Switzerland MEDAL WINNERS 1 0 0 1 8 SVK Slovakia MEDAL WINNERS 1 0 0 1 8 SWE Sweden MEDAL WINNERS 1 0 0 1 8 CZE Czech Republic MEDAL WINNERS 1 0 0 1 8 EST Estonia MEDAL WINNERS 0 1 0 1 8 POL Poland MEDAL WINNERS 0 1 0 1 8 AUS Australia MEDAL WINNERS 0 1 0 1 8 RUS Russia MEDAL WINNERS 0 0 1 1 8 AUT Austria MEDAL WINNERS 0 0 1 1 8 CRO Croatia MEDAL WINNERS 0 0 1 1

I'm pleased to report that finally, we've won Gold on home ground. And it couldn't have gone to a better person... Alex Bilodeau seems like a class act. If Australia wants Dale Begg-Smith they can have him. And now he might protest the results. Aussies claim Bilodeau's gold tainted Me too. I'm watching the women's hockey between Canada and Switzerland now... it isn't a blow-out like the first game, but they've got a comfortable lead. Yeah but anything better than 7th place will be an improvement over last time. That was a disaster.

The Women's Canadian Hockey Team is doing quite well... they won their first game 18-0 over Slovakia, and are leading the Swiss right now 9-0. Of course we all know that the big game is against the U.S.

NHL.com is predicting that the Swedes will win the Gold Medal in Hockey! E veryone has his own opinion about how the Olympic hockey tournament will shake out. NHL.com’s John Dellapina, Dan Rosen and Shawn Roarke offer their opinions about who will go home happy – and who won’t.
Gold Medal game participants: Sweden vs. USA
Winner: Sweden
Why: Unlike the American greatest hockey generation, which ran out of gas in Salt Lake City eight years ago without adequate reinforcements from the next generation, Sweden gets it done a second straight time because its most important player (goaltender Henrik Lundqvist) is just entering his athletic prime, greybeards such as Nicklas Lidstrom, Daniel Alfredsson and Peter Forsberg still run on much more than fumes and a couple of new superstars, Nicklas Backstrom and Henrik Sedin, are in full flower. With all due respect to Canada and Russia, no team is stronger down the middle than this one, whose national flag-bearer (Forsberg) could well play the role of third-line checking center. The Swedes also have the ability to come together quickly by playing Henrik and Daniel Sedin together up front and pairing Lidstrom and Detroit teammate Niklas Kronwall on defense. Ryan Miller steals the one game he must for Team USA in pool play, beating Canada to earn a bye into the quarters and easier route through the medal round.www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=517731

It's a pitty that they're having such problems with snow (and rain) on the outdoor events. And then there was that business with the ice not working right for speed skating yesterday. Not to mention the luge track problems and the malfunctioning Olympic cauldron during the opening ceremonies.
Is it just me, or is this Olympics having more than its share of technical difficulties?

All olympics have problems of one sort. The Sarajevo Olympics suffered from snow issues. I was living in Austria at that winter and the snow was terrible there too. Part of the problem is the ever increasing number of events and the expanding technology component.
Although one would think they could get the ice right; there is nothing high tech about surfacing a rink. Or perhaps the problem is that they made it high tech. They were quick to blame the luger that was killed for the driver error, but subsequent alterations to the course indicate that it could have been safer as well without blocking the spectators views.
Still it has been a great show. The NBC broadcast even made the biathlon a dramatic substitute for the more exciting but postponed downhill skiing.

I'm wondering if Alexandre Bilodeau will be the Canadian flag-bearer at the closing ceremony, although it's a little early to be making predictions. But it wouldn't surprise me if they chose him.

... so they pick the warmest winter city in Canada to host... (Yeah I know the skiing is up in the mountains, but still)

Woo-hoo! I was surprised to hear that because the last I heard she was nearly disqualified earlier in the day.
They should have held all of the outdoor events at Whistler, but then it would be hard to call them the Vancouver Olympics. The IOC doesn't usually award the Olympics to resort towns with a population of less than 10,000 people.
