I saw that last night. Kramer was really upset about it, and who can blame him? The commentator suggested that the coach should go into the Dutch equivelent of the wittness protection program. It was a terrible mistake.. But, this coach has helped Sven Kramer become world champion 3 times, European champion 4 times, several world records, several world cup wins, and a lot more. They are IMHO the most professional athlete/coach team in the Netherlands. As Kramer said: "You don't just throw all of that away". My opinion about professional or amateur players.. IMHO the Olympic win should be one of the highest possible achievements anyone can win, either in team or personal. Disallowing the best players degrades the value of the championship. In summer Olympics soccer, only young players can attend (<23 years, I believe, and up to 3 players who are older). An Olympic soccer medal is great, but it carries nowhere near the prestige of a world championship, European championship, or even winning either of the Euro cups for clubs. Good luck Canada, great game vs Russia so far. 6-2.. 5 mins into 2nd... wow.

It's been an AWESOME day for Canada at the Olympics... Gold AND Silver for the womens two man bobsleigh Silver for the womens 3000m Relay speed skating Bronze for Clara Hughes in the 5000m speed skating AND we beat Russia in tonight's hockey game 7-3. Did I miss anything? Oh yeah, we're tied with the US and Germany for the most gold medals.

One does have to question how you can have a "womens two man bobsleigh"

I just heard Brian Williams mention the strangeness of that term again. He also thinks today should be known as Wonderful Wednesday.

I'm sure most Canadians will look at the overall medal count, not just the golds, and decide we didn't live up to our "own the podium" goal. We have (so far) fewer medals than we won at the 2006 Olympics. But I'm pretty happy with how things are going so far, and we're still in the running for at least four more gold medals (men and women's curling, and men and women's hockey).

Tonights woman's final will be a great game too - Canada vs. USA. That's surely one of the most fierce rivalries in all sports! Its 2-0 for Canada right now!

so how many Million per gold has that been? Here is the funding behind the Canadian "Own the Podium" program. www.ownthepodium2010.com/Funding/comparison.aspxThey spent nearly $70 million over the last four years on actual athlete training. So that's $8.7 million per gold medal (so far), or $4.4 million per medal if you also include silver and bronze medals. By comparison, they only spent $15 million on athlete training in the four years leading up to the 2006 Olympics.

Australia's 40 million dollar gold medal:
How much support — financial, medical, coaching, training — would you need to reach the pinnacle of your profession? If you are an athlete in Australia, then about $40 million. That is a conservative estimate of what each Olympic gold medal in the last 20 years has cost Australian taxpayers.www.crikey.com.au/2008/08/08/40-million-its-how-much-each-gold-medal-costs-us/
