It would be great to run this through a planetarium program that did take gravity into account. Looks like it either hits or comes very close to the moon shortly after closest earth approach, and if it does miss it would still fling it off into space.

It's a hit. Change your location to the Moon and you will see it get enveloped.
Also, you can change your location to another planet and watch the encounter from a distance.
