Lovell gets his first flight assignment as prime pilot on Gemini 7 with Borman commanding. As per the three mission rotation, he rotates to the backup crew of Gemini 10, but because Borman is now working on getting Apollo ready, he takes the commander position with Aldrin as his pilot.
Following the tragic deaths of Ted Freedman and Elliot See, the prime crew of Gemini 9, their backups, Stafford and Cernan become the prime crew and Lovell and Aldrin are brought forward to be their backups.
Then, as per the rotation, they rotate to Gemini 12 as prime crew, which they fly.
Next it's the backup crew of the third Apollo mission, the first one of course ending in tragedy before it even leaves the ground. Lovell is now backup CMP for Apollo 8, with Armstrong as commander andFred Haise as LMP (don't know where Aldrin went)*.
When Mike Collins gets spinal troubles and goes in for corrective surgery, Lovell gets transferred to the Apollo 8 prime crew working under Borman.
It is after that flight, that Lovell rotates to the backup on Apollo 11 and since Borman has had enough already, Lovell is now commander.
That puts him in line to command Apollo 14, but because people are worried about the crew of three rookies on Apollo 13, they decide to bring Lovell's crew forward to allow Shepard's crew more time to prepare.
At that point Lovell has had enough, or more accurately, Marilyn has had enough.
The big question is, why did Lovell get the CMP role for Apollo 8? He had way more flight time than Armstrong, had done more things than Armstrong. What made Armstrong so hot that Lovell is made #2?
* Ah, actually Aldrin was backup LMP, but got promoted to backup CMP when Lovell replaced Collins on the prime crew, and only then was Haise brought in to be backup LMP.
