Someone told me that sting rays, like dolphins and some other fish, like to jump out of the water and that the old man's boat just happened to be in the wrong place at the right time. I didn't bother to check that. Supposedly the stinger got the guy in the chest, but it missed his heart.
I liked Steve Irwin. He always cheered me up.

The difference is that the old guy didn't yank it out. That is what killed Irwin. By the way, he has made it into cultural "immortality", one might say: www.cnn.com/2006/SHOWBIZ/TV/10/27/irwin.southpark/index.html 'South Park' mocks Steve Irwin
Edit: Satan in the episode said, "You know, it's probably a little early to be making fun of that. You know it just happened like 3 weeks ago" (not a direct quote).

Anyone else read "Lucky You" by Carl Hiaasen? I only ask because one character in it is very much the type of the conspiracy theorists who ascribe all the world's ills to the evil US government. The book pre-dates 9/11, but this is all that stops the character agreeing with the "Truthers".
I can recommend the book to anyone with a sense of humour, and am posting to this thread because the CT character ends up with an unfortunate meeting with a stingray.

Just a funny thing, we actually had a girl over here who was on a boat and a dolphin jumped out of the water and landed on her. Not so funny haha, because she ended up in hospital with all but one rib broken, collapsed lungs, borken pelvis and clinging to life, but certainly funny weird.

The really funny thing about that story is that I'll be most people immediately ask whether the dolphin was hurt. Sure a girl nearly got killed, but we hope the poor cetacean didn't get any permanent trauma.

In the next ironic twist, the dolphin will probably sue the girl for post-trumatic stress.
