I apologize to the rest of the list, as I am about to make a bunch of Bible quotes which are really just a response to Dead Hoosiers.
To rely in any degree on good works as an assist to the salvation Christ provided on the cross is a work of iniquity.
I agree that our good works are not enough to save us without Christ's grace, but can we really be saved without doing good works?
2 Cor. 15:7 "Be ye strong therefore, and let not your hands be weak:
for your work shall be rewarded."
Psalms 28:4 "Give them according to their
deeds, and according to the wickedness of their
endeavours: give them after the
work of their hands; render to them their desert."
Psalms 62:12 "Also unto thee, O Lord, belongeth mercy: for thou renderest to every man
according to his work."
Eccl. 12:14 "For God shall bring every
work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil."
Jer. 17:10 "I the LORD search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man
according to his ways, and
according to the fruit of his doings."
Micah 6:8 "He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to
do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?"
Matt. 5:16 "Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your
good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven."
Matt. 7:12 "Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you,
do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets."
Matt. 16:27 "For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man
according to his works."
John 3:21 "But he that
doeth truth cometh to the light, that his
deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God."
Acts 10:34-35 "Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons: But in every nation he that feareth him, and
worketh righteousness, is accepted with him."
Rom. 2:13 "(For not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the
doers of the law shall be justified."
2 Cor. 5:10 "For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body,
according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad."
Gal. 6:3-5 "For if a man think himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceiveth himself. But let every man
prove his own work, and then shall he have rejoicing in himself alone, and not in another. For every man shall
bear his own burden."
Gal. 6:7 "Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man
soweth, that shall he also reap."
1 Pet. 1:17 "And if ye call on the Father, who without respect of persons judgeth according to every man’s
work, pass the time of your sojourning here in fear:"
1 John 3:18 "My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in
deed and in truth."
1 John 3:22 "And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we
keep his commandments, and
do those things that are pleasing in his sight."
James 1:22 "But be ye
doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves."
James 2:14-26 "What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him? If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food, And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit?
Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone. Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works. Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble. But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead? Was not Abraham our father
justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar? Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect? And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God. Ye see then how that
by works a man is justified, and not by faith only. Likewise also was not Rahab the harlot justified by works, when she had received the messengers, and had sent them out another way? For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also."
It appears that we must have good works and faith together, and then God's grace is sufficient.
No it's not. It's not our place to judge who has been saved and who hasn't. Since we are forbidden from judging, restricting "Christian" to mean "those who are saved" would mean that we can't ever actually use the word.
A word that can't be used is useless. Therefore I go with the broader definition that can be used to differentiate between those who claim to follow Christ and those who make no such claim.
