The whole "when the economy goes to h$ll only gold will be able to buy anything" line always evades me.
If the whole world entered an wholesale anarchist state that the survivalists say it will then gold will be pretty much useless. You cannot eat gold, you cannot wear gold, it does not make a very good construction material, has bad characteristics as insulation, and if everyone is struggling to get enough to feed themselves and their family while protecting same from others, then no one is going to be wanting or needing jewelery and the manufacturing uses of gold won't exist. It will make a good door stop but rocks are more plentiful and just as good.
So, if I were of the mindset to stockpile something that would be of use for bartering I would stockpile multivitamins, sterile dressings, dried corn, peas and beans and bolts of stout cotton fabric.
P.W. - Did the name of the character on "King of the Hill" , "Dale Grabble" come from "J. Orlin Grabbe " I wonder? If you are not familiar with the show, that character never heard a conspiracy theory that he could not love.

Guns seem a more obvious choice for the apocalypse than gold. If you've got a gun and the other guy doesn't then you don't really need to barter to get what you want.

Jason: While big-time "terrorists" like Osama bin Laden (Tim Osman), can't be found by thousands of troops armed with the latest technology. Do you have any idea just how big Afghanistan (which he may not even be in) is? Or how few roads it has? Please try to keep the extremely ignorant statements like yours above to a minimum.

I may have been harsh, but I'm a little frustrated. Every time I present calmer, equally well-thought-out posts, I get brushed aside as not knowing anything. Well, I do, and there are people who know a heck of a lot more than I in relevant fields who agree with me. In fact, pretty much all the people who know a heck of a lot more than I in relevant fields agree with me. But I'm the one who isn't looking at all the evidence?

So, as a religious person, are you okay with people stealing or committing murder in order to survive? Isn't that a violation of a couple of commandments?

I always thought toilet paper would be a great thing to hoard. Fill your attic with it. Terrific R-factor, and you'll be able to trade it for just about anything.

Quite understandable: DH's brand of patronisation from a completely delusional standpoint can be intensely annoying.

Osama bin Laden (Tim Osman) Just because I'm curious... Do you actually have evidence that Osama bin Laden ever went by the name Tim Osman, or are you basing your entire belief in this on a solitory story told by J. Orlin Grabbe with zero supporting evidence and which even truther sites have to admit that they can't in any way verify, even though they are happy to spread it all over the net verbatum? Ummm...... it appears that I was. Once I started looking, almost everything led back to Grabbe. But I found a couple of items that may not be tainted at the source and I'm reading them now. What I've learned is that although the CIA funded the Afghani jihadists who ended up under the command of bin Laden, he may not have been an official CIA asset/agent. Maybe if the VALIS on this board is who I think he is, he can shine some light on this question.

Am I summoned? I do go by that handle on another board (where I'm also a lurker) but I doubt I'm the person you think, I really don't know much about the subject. The extent of my knowledge about US / Afghan fighters cooperation is pretty much limited to Rambo III.

Do you know who killed John Lennon? I know it was in NY in front of a building but I had to visit wikipedia to remember the name: Chapman
