Well, the Canadian men's hockey team is doing well in their first game (against Norway); 3-0 and the second period's almost over.

Is it just me, or is this Olympics having more than its share of technical difficulties? Nobody is perfect.

Lake Placid hosted the Olympics twice and only has 2600 people.... Yeah, that's true... it just seems like even major cities can't host the Olympics without going deep into debt.

It's 9 minutes into the Russia vs. Latvia game and the Russians have already scored 2 goals. I'll have to see what the outcome of this game was tomorrow... time for bed!

There is an interesting article in the Wall Street Journal, Speed and Commerce Skewed Track's Design that discusses the engineering, commercial and managerial decisions that went into the design of the sliding center. It covers, albeit lightly, the constraints that go into any such projects. One item noted toward the end of the article was that on previous tracks, the track designer was also the general contractor. While on this one, his firm only designed and built the actual track. The supports and covering were done by another company. This may have contributed to a design the left the columns exposed where Kumaritashvili hit them.

Another great hockey game from the Canadian women's team today. They beat Sweden 13-1.

And Canada got another medal. Marianne St-Gelais won silver in 500m speedskating . . . on her 20th birthday!

And Australia won the gold in the women's snowboard half-pipe (I think that's the event). It looked as though there were more Aussies in the crowd there than were at the cricket today in the Melbourne Cricket Ground (the times they are a-changin').

When I lived in Kitzbuhel, Austria it seemed like there were more Aussies there than in all of Australia. You guys get around.

Are there any good snowboarding resorts in Australia itself?

Well I've just watched a whole bunch of two man bobsleigh teams trying to figure out which way is up.

It looks pretty painful to scrape your helmet along a track at 90 miles per hour. Almost as painful as loosing a prelim hockey match to the U.S...
