Curious to know how the interface between the SM and CM passed through the heat shield without compromising the heat shield integrity.
Anyone suggest a reference?

There were umbilical lines inside a boom that was attached to the side of the SM and the side of the CM. When the CM and SM separated, the boom swung open and out of the way. You can see it here in the lower left between the SM and CM

The following article at NASA gives good information about recent efforts to gain insight for Orion design considerations by going back and looking at the CM/SM Umbilical connections on one of the remaining, flight-rated (though obviously not flight-ready) CSM's at Kennedy Space Center. www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/constellation/orion/umbilical_inspection.htmlIf memory serves, the CSM shown here is the Skylab Rescue CSM. Cz Edited to add...Correction, the CSM was the backup for Apollo / Soyuz.

Thx guys.
So, if I read correctly, the umbilical more or less looped around the outside, rather that through the heat shield, right?

However, if so, how come the mode 1 abort module could fit on the CM with that bulge hanging off on one side? And, no I am not a HB, I am simply trying to fend off my own HB homunculus.

It's not something people notice, because it is on the opposite side of the CM hatch and is not normally visible when you see images from the LUT or during the launch.

The Boost Protective Cover left with the escape tower at Tower Jett(ison). It was gone before orbit.
