Hi, I'm new to this so apologies if I posted in the wrong forum.
I've been going through a confusing period at the moment.
I am interested in the moon landing conspiracy and I enjoy debating it with people, so thats why I joined this site.
I want to study psychology in college, so history is not really he subject area I plan to go down in. Thing is, I'm spending SO much time researching the moon controversy.
I've watched many youtube videos both for AND against the hoax theory and I've seen a few documentaries on the moon landing in general.
I cannot figure out whats going on right now, I believe the moon landings happened but I still can't understand why I'm interested in the whole conspiracy.
But there has to be some other reason because no one else in my family cares about this conspiracy theory. Would anyone have anything to say on what it might be for me?

I can certainly see there may be an interest in the psychology of conspiracy theories and theorists. I wonder if there has been much actual research into it....

The funny thing is that I don't care about the science, but I do about the history. And, to a much lesser extent, the psychology. I find that the psychology gets boring pretty quickly. You can always find new and interesting things in the history of it. Whereas the psychology is pretty routine.

I’m afraid I can be of no help in explaining one’s fascination with the hoax theory. Personally, I don’t care about the hoax theory. I think it’s just a bunch of pathetic individuals trying to feel important by trampling all over the accomplishments of others. What I care about is the truth of Apollo. I’m fascinated by the history and technology of it. I only get involved in discussions about the hoax theory because it angers me when idiots try to convince other people it didn’t happen.

From my own experience ... I hadn't even realised there were people in the world who didn't believe that NASA landed men on the moon until I watched a Channel 5 documentary (featuring JayUtah from this very board) back in 2005 (?).
At first it was kind of a car crash issue. Nothing the hoax theorists said made any sense to me, even with my fairly rudimentary, high school level of understanding of the science around it, but I became fascinated by the mindset around the conspiracy theory and, as a result, have learned more about the reality of the Apollo programme and the science and technology behind it than I ever would have done without discovering the hoax theory.
Bottom line ... I have never cared for, or believed, the hoax theories for a second but, because they exist, my understanding of that part of history is richer and deeper than it would have been without them.
Some of the proponents of the theories really do need to smell the coffee though.

I debate people that believe the landings were a hoax not so for the pleasure, (It can actually be a pain in the rear at times) but because I think it's everyone's responsibility to fight stupidity and ignorance where you they find it. I cannot believe how many people I run into that believe that it is either a hoax, or at least might be. It is usually rooted in a nearly complete ignorance of science.
On the David Icke forums, we recently tried to come up with reasons why people believe in it. Different people classify the landings as a "hoax" for different reasons. There are many factors involved, such as...
1: Anti-American sentiment. I'm sure I'm not the only person to notice that most hoaxers you run into are not American.
2: Jealousy. See no 1!
3: Ignorance. Any moon landing hoax debate should be proof enough. I have yet to meet a hoax believer that has a firm grasp on even the most basic of science principles.
4: Laziness. Understanding how things work and why things are the way they are takes even the smallest amount of effort. Why work up a sweat when it much easier to sit back, point your finger at something that's beyond your comprehension and declare it fraud?
5: The God Complex. Both Jarrah White and Jack White are great at it and it ties in closely to number 4. Just do enough research (and I use the term loosely) to make yourself dangerous, gather up a group of uneducated minions that are ignorant enough to believe you, and voila! Instant Hero of the millennium!

photobuster919, good luck finding the answer to that question. I've been asking myself why I keep coming back to this Moon landings conspiracy thing for over 5 years.

It's a laugh. And like Mr Gorsky it's really useful for learning more about the reality of Apollo. Like everyone I accepted the moonlandings as real by default. Then someone comes along and presents evidence to the contrary. I look into it and study Apollo in more detail and now I don't accept the moonlandings are real, I know the moonlandings are real.

No one else in my family cares either and it is not all that important in the broader scheme, but neither of those are particularly important to me, we all have our own interest that we follow. My start in conspiracy thinking came from learning about American racists religious movements and turned toward the Apollo hoax when I became aware of it. I ultimately have more interest in science, engineering and exploration. In addition, there was this very nice community in which to share our interest, even when our non-internet friends are uninterested. The benefits have been to learn much more about the Apollo program and clear, rational thinking. So just go with it as long as it holds an interest to you. If you are interested in psychology, there is a world of quirks and maladies to be found among hoax believers.

I agree with either not American or a American with a severe distrust in your guys government. That has been a argument I have faced several times is that I'm Canadian so STFU cause I couldn't possibly know the corruption of the federal system. My handles the same as well most places so it's funny cause first I'm insulted on being from Texas or Arkansas and sleep with my cousin to a idiot hosed, Eh!

I don't hate the Americans too, I actually respect them for how they came through and defeated the Russians in the end. This is the video, which made me really start to think along the lines of psychology behind conspiracies. www.youtube.com/watch?v=oDBWb6rEodM&feature=relatedAlso to BertL thanks for wishing me luck. I hope that you find your way out of this yourself.
