Apparently Zond 5 carried a tape recording of a cosmonaut's transmission, which is broadcast as it made its trip around the Moon.
Was there any point to this other than making the American cack themselves? If the Russians had chosen to, could they have tried to use this to claim there actually was a cosmonaut on board?

Perhaps it was to test to see if the reception at the other end was acceptable?
