Other than John Glenn of course. I vaguely remember a Republican congressman who had been an astronaut.

Jack Swigert, was elected to represent Colorado in the House of Representatives, but died of cancer before taking office. Jack Schmitt was elected as Senator from New Mexico and served one term before loosing reelection.
Edited to correct Jack Schmittâs name.

Bill Nelson was a member of Congress when he flew aboard the space shuttle Columbia in January 1986. He is now a senator.

Jack Swigert, was elected to represent Colorado in the House of Representatives, but died of cancer before taking office. Jack Harrison was elected as Senator from New Mexico and served one term before loosing reelection. I checked on Wikipedia the Senator's name was Dr. Harrison Hagan "Jack" Schmitt and was one of the last 2 men to visit the Moon. I think that's the guy I was thinking about. I thought it would have been funny to see a John Glenn / Bill Bradley vs. Jack Kemp / Jack Schmitt presidential election. I'm sure the European press would have made all sorts of jokes about that. For those of you not up on US politics - Glenn and Bradley were long term Democratic Senators [ 70s - late 90s] and had both made presidential bids. Kemp a long term congressman was the Republican candidate for vice-president in '96. Kemp was a star [American] football player in the 50s and 60s, and Bradley was a star basketball player in the 60s and 70s.
