No colour here please. Just pure black and white!
What are your top ten black and white movies of all time? Tell me. And remember, this is for posterity so be honest.
12 Angry Men Night of the Living Dead Dr. Strangelove Paths of Glory Bride of Frankenstein The Day the Earth Stood Still Elephant Man A Hard Days Night The Hustler King Kong
I'm sure I'm forgetting a bunch, but I can list only ten anyway. These are all great films, I was tempted to put in one or two silent ones, but then thought about it again and realized that I do like dialogue in my movies. Almost put in Sin City, but there is some colour in it.
AND TO ANYONE OUT THERE: Has anyone seen the Abel Gance film NAPOLEON? A silent classic from 1927. Is it worth searching out and buying? What is the soundtrack (music) like?

Wouldn't you know it, 12 Angry Men is on tonight on AMC at 6:15 EST.
Also, how about permitting all lists to be able to be edited? That is, you can change your top 10 whenever you want, as you get feedback from other posts and remember stuff you forgot (I do this all the time).

Hud Dr. Strangelove The Day The Earth Stood Still Manchurian Candidate Raging Bull Seven Samurai To Kill a Mockingbird Metropolis The Hidden Fortress Rashomon Hud- what a S.O.B. Paul Newman is in that movie! Manchurian Candidate - I saw it years ago, but I remember it being a lot better than the remake. Raging Bull - aren't there some colour scenes in this movie? The Hidden Fortress, Roshomon, Seven Samurai - I've got to see these, especially the Japanese classics. I've only seen the western based on the Seven Samurai. Metropolis - good movie. What did you think of the new soundtrack? Are you familiar with the 1936 movie 'Things to Come' ? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Things_to_ComeJust searched and you can watch it here: www.archive.org/details/things_to_come_ipod_version

Wouldn't you know it, 12 Angry Men is on tonight on AMC at 6:15 EST. That's not possible; it's an American movie classic. Oh, dear. Ten, huh? Okay, let's do "for now." Roman Holiday, of course; it's my favourite movie. To Kill a MockingbirdSome Like It HotModern TimesBringing Up BabyCasablancaA Hard Day's NightThe MisfitsDuck SoupThe Thin Man Goes Home (I love the whole series, but that one's the best.) Ginnie, there's colour in Schindler's List, both at the end and the little girl in the red coat. RAF, there's a review of Abbot and Costello Meet Frankenstein in the final issue of my school paper from my senior year. One of the people working on it came up to me (I was the People Page editor, which included reviews) and said that he wanted to review something that not many people had heard of, so I loaned him my mother's copy.

My overall top ten already has:
Some Like It Hot The General The Third Man A Night at the Opera
so I need another six, still in no particular order:
Seven Samurai Casablanca Citizen Kane The Dambusters The Lady Vanishes The Lavender Hill Mob

Sort of odd...a lot of my list would be movies I don't think of as "black and white," but as something else; as early Kurosawa flicks (Seven Samurai, Yojimbo, Hidden Fortress...) or as silent comedies (The General, Safety Last, Steamboat Bill Jr....) or as a Marx Brothers or W.C. Field vehicle (can't leave off Duck Soup or Night at the Opera!)
But then have to add a few classic SF to the mix; Metropolis (natch!), Day the Earth Stood Still; a few that are more fantastical (Cabinet of Doctor Caligari, The Golem). And then there's no room for films that are just plain classic -- Third Man, Thin Man, Citizen Kane, et al.
I'm not sure a modern film would make that list just because they chose to film it in black and white.
(Oh, and how can I skip early animation; Gertie the Dinosaur, or Minnie the Moocher!)

Oh, I dislike W. C. Fields intensely. The best part of The Big Broadcast of 1938 was that he had a small part in it. Then again, I dislike him less than I dislike Mae West!

Fox has reissued The Day the Earth Stood Still in a newly restored DVD. It has been regraded in order to show more of the original gray tones of the negative and is superior to any of the prior releases.
