I'm not sure if you would have know or not. I think the poppy is a Commonwealth idea. Do they wear them in NZ and Australia? Not so much for Armitise Day, but we do for ANZAC day (25th of April.) This is our rememberance day as it is the anniversary of the tragic invasion of Turkey in 1915 were many ANZACs died. There is a small movement here to remember Passiondale as well, though it is unlikely to be more that Armitise Day where we have a minutes silence at 11:11am.

Which is why I qualified it with 'for those who will except it'. Troops have fought in a variety of actions throughout the years, from many countries in many places. I was speaking from a Canadian perspective. I realize that if for instance if you are a soldier that was forced into military service in some African country against your will, and ordered to participate in unethical behavior, my thank you would be meaningless and perhaps even irritating.

I agree with him on that. I didn't like having this war, but served anyway (though I was already in the service when it started). He was, too. He joined in June of '01. He spent most of his time in a motorpool filing. I imagine that's an aspect of things, too. Sure, sure. Though he didn't actually join for any sort of noble serving his country sort of reason. It's just what they do in his family, except his younger brother and sister.

I wasn't serving for nobility either. I suppose my grandfather's tales of the navy influenced me.
Well, in any case, I hope he comes back safe.

Oh! Well, glad to hear that. My sister's husband also returned recently. I give a salute to all service members and their spouses.

I'm going to go back to the start of this topic and mention the site that Ginnie mentioned. I went ot have a look and something intrigued me about the video that was being discussed. I thought I'd post my question here as I'd probably get a better answer.
In the Apollo 15 video linked (from YouTube but it'll do) the flag is indeed seen to move as the astronaut passes. At the start of the clip, the flag is set up and is seen to move, but the movement gradually dies away. Then the astronaut passes left to right, between the camera and flag, and the flag is seen to move as he passes. Now, given the lack of depth info, apart from the fact the the astronaut is betwixt camera and flag, it's difficult to tell, but is it possible that he actually brushed the end of the flag with his suit as he passed? The motion seen is in the same direction as he moves, which would be correct. Thoughts?
I'd also like to add my appreciation to the armed forces whose sacrifice ensured we have the reedom to have these debates here.

Well, it seems two HBers are well underway in their talks.
One of them is none other than our own Rocky! He can't get over that sand issue.
Currently, my quandry is with the person named 1plus8, or something to that effect.
I feel at a loss in trying to explain radiation and it's relation to Apollo. I did give him the link to a site provided to me in "Apollo by the numbers" about radiation. He claims the data is fake, and gives some of his own figures as to why it's fake, and compares it to data from the ISS.
I do feel more brainpower is needed. Volunteers?

I've tried arguing with 1plus8 before. Its just a waste of time, you'll never convince him of anything. Chances are its just sock puppet anyway.

I agree that arguing with someone that convinced is probably a waste of time, but the main problem with the "analysis" by 1plus8 is that it doesn't take time into account. For example, he says it must be fake because Apollos 7 & 8 show the same figures for radiation where 8 should have more since it went out into cislunar space. This doesn't account for the fact that 7 pretty much sat in LEO for a bit over 10 days, while 8 just zipped out and back in about 5.5.
Besides the time factor, he "guesses" a lot, and It sure sounds like he misinterprets the "continuous" cosmic ray bombardment as meaning "high intensity".

You can't fake your way through exposure estimates and expect them to be remotely accurate. You either work the model correctly, or your results are entirely meaningless.
And yes, orbital missions accumulate more exposure than cislunar ones of similar durations because of SAMA transits. That's where "common sense" is simply wrong.

My experience with 1plus8 has been that when you present him with facts, he calls them lies, says you've been brainwashed or whatever and then just goes on and on with his misbegotten ideas. So it doesn't matter how many people come at this person with all the truth we can find, he's not going to believe it. I gave up after only a few messages with him because his pattern was always the same and it was just a waste of time and it also got me way too frustrated.

1plus8 is none other than eric144144, who is none other than Greig Dempsey, who was banned here. His mission statement was to cause as much grief for pro Apollo folk just so he could sit back and gloat. Best ignored.

That was the guy who co-founded the MSN Apollo hoax forum, now defunct. That was where our very own BertL took him on and showed him up for the ignoramus he is, despite his claims of various qualifications.

I should really upload those pages back onto the internet, as the MSN board itself has been closed down (how convenient). EDIT: By the way, 1plus8 does seem to have left Craig's board. But that post was on November 9, and according to his member profile he has visited the board this day. So I guess he's back again. EDIT 2: Ack! Can't register as "BertL". I guess it's going to have to be BertLs again. And the Delphi Forums work in a weird way... lots of advertisements. But it'll do.
