He was the last astronaut of the '63 class to fly apart from Elliott See who died before he had the chance. By the time he got around to flying, Dave Scott, Gene Cernan, Mike Collins and Buzz Aldrin had already flown twice.
Why did Al have to wait?

Al Bean was initially assigned to the Apollo Applications Program, which was working on things like a lunar base, a space station, missions to Mars, etc. (Skylab came out of this program). I think it was the death of C.C. Williams that gave Bean the chance to be assigned to an Apollo crew.

Glom, In case you don't know, Al Bean will be in London Sunday Sept 10 at 7pm see www.artscatalyst.org/projects/space/spacesoon.htmlShould be a great chance to meet him and listen to the talks he will give. I just got most of the Skylab downlink footage, and it is a treat watching his team run the station. cheers Dwight
