I was mentioning the same to a friend over brunch (I live near there; I think I passed under that bit of the maze on Friday night.)
You didn't mention that a man named Rodriguez heard (about) an explosion and met a burned man!

Let's see...truck hits guardrail at 3:41...first responders arrive 3:55...bridge collapses at 4:02. Very suspicious indeed. The fire couldn't have been that hot, with all the thick black smoke.
Now, will the investigation impound and analyze in detail every scrap of concrete and steel for months and years for analysis...or will the cover it all up, haul it all away and sell it to the Chinese? Who owns the company that built the bridge? Any option activity on the price of gas, mass transit stocks in the Bay area?
This bears watching...

gillianren already called it over on BAUT - the bridge was made with thermite-coated rebar.

Covering it up. Rather than preserve the evidence of this crime, the evil Caltrans is already hard at work demolishing the remains of the structure. (Actually, they started last night).

That whole thread on BAUT is absolutely hilarious, and sad. (I include my own contribution in both categories.)

Woot! I'm right! [does happy dance, falls over]
It's my new answer to everything woo these days--it's all due to explosive rebar.

This morning on NPR the reporter said the truck fire "melted" steel in the bridge. It seems like a word usage drift. The meaning of melted changes from transforming a solid into a liquid by adding heat to heating a solid enough for it to become bendable.
