Yahoo -- here at last! I'd almost given up hope that this movie would show up in our movie theatres, but it opens in Palmerston North's Cinema Gold tomorrow, Thursday 22 May, so might be in other theatres around the country. If it has already shown in your area, shame on you for not letting us know! I never heard of "For All Mankind" until I saw it on DVD-ROM, and would have loved to have seen it on the big screen too, so I won't be missing this one. Although I have hundreds of DVDs and was an avid movie-goer for a few decades, it will be the first time I've seen a movie in a theatre since "Independence Day" on 11 October 1996. Which documentry was the one narrated by Tom Hanks not long ago? I don't think I know that one. Tom Hanks did the introduction to, and acted in one episode of, the mini-series From The Earth To The Moon, but he didn't do any narration. Could this be what you're thinking of? |

Blockbusters like Indiana Jones and the Kigdom of the Cystal Skull open here first in the world, (along with being the first to get MS Vista, Harry Potter etc) but anything in the non blockbuster variety ( March of the Pengiuns, Shadow of the Moon) we are lucky to see within months of the rest of the world, if at all. Even for DVDs. To get From the Earth to the Moon on DVD we had to wait for the special signature release even though it had been out in the US for years before that. Heck on one occasion I have even seen the video available as a new release before it showed in the Theatres (it was an artisty type romance so a non-blockbuster.) Sometimes it's weird, the rest of the time it it just frustrating. |

I saw it at a documentary film festival in April and it's showing at a small local theatre here this week. I'll get it on DVD next time I place an order.

I saw Magnificient Desolation at an IMAX cinema a while ago. The effects were brilliant, especially the bit in orbit around the Moon, but mostly I found myself concentrating on the lunar landscape trying to ignore the CGI astronauts and all the propaganda trying to convince American kids that the main justification for a return to the Moon is because it would be rather cool to stroll around up there.  |

Both are great! I've only seen 'In The Shadow of the Moon' on the weenie-teenie-tiny aircraft seat video, but I saw Desolation at USSRC Huntsville. That was a mistake...
Now I have to build an IMAX theatre in my home!

"In the Shadow of the Moon" certainly is a fantastic movie. As soon as it finished I just wanted to view it again. Oh well, will have to wait for the DVD.
I hope a few HBs go to see it -- they might learn something. I had never heard of Buzz Aldrin "tending to a particular bodily function" shortly before stepping onto the moon, and it also sounded as if Buzz, being "Dr Rendezvous," was responsible for the 1201 and 1202 alarms that nearly caused an abort of the Apollo 11 moonlanding, although he didn't know it at the time.
There are some awe-inspiring sights and plenty of laughs. Those wrinkly, age-spotted, silver-haired old guys still have their sense of humour.
There are quite a few bits of footage I've never seen, including one that should have been on the Spacecraft Films Apollo 11 DVD set -- 16mm colour film of Apollo 11 flag in it's new, turned position following the thruster test.

Imagine my surprise on looking at the TV listings a week ago and seeing "In the Shadow of the Moon" was being shown in an hour.  Naturally we had to leave the father-in-law's immediately. It was good to see the astronauts after all this time and hear what they had to say. Yes, Buzz admitted leaving the rendezvous radar on just in case they needed it quickly and it didn't start up. There was also an interesting bit near the end about spiritual experiences - Gene Cernan and Charlie Duke both seem to have had feelings of awe, connectedness and meaning. For Duke it strengthened his belief in Jesus whereas Cernan didn't identify it with any particular religious dogma and left it much more open ended and therefore possibly more meaningful for the unbeliever. |

I saw this at KSC's IMAX theater. I also revisited the Apollo exhibit. Even though I've been there before, it's still very cool, even during the simulation of the Apollo 8 launch. Another visitor center there also has Apollo on exhibit, including one of the CMs (it's the center that's a few miles away from KSC). It was this visit that I first saw the DSKY in all it's glory; looked similar in total size to a desktop PC. And I've ranted enough off topic already! |

I just saw a commercial for "In the Shadow of the Moon" on the Canadian Discovery Channel... it's going to be airing June 29th.
