The right wingnut attack machine is already operating at full steam with insipid attacks against Barack Obama. There is already a "whispering campaign" that claims he is a secret muslim. www.politico.com/news/stories/1007/6314.htmlAnd this stuff is only going to get worse. So I thought I'd point out some of the more idiotic claims as they come along. First up, Former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (currently charged with felony money laundering and conspiracy counts in Texas) claims that Obama is a MARXIST: "I have said publicly, and I will again, that unless he proves me wrong, he is a Marxist," - Tom DeLay Not content with smearing just his religion, wingnuts are now going to claim that Obama is a Secret Muslim Marxist. I guess when you are a party of no ideas, this is what you have to do.

A couple of weeks ago I was talking to a lady who believed Bush was behind the 9/11 attacks. She was French-Canadian but it appeared she had become a Muslim (I didn't directly ask her). Then she told me that Obama's mother was muslim. She said "Not many people know that". I don't know if she did extensive research or not about this. ;D

So what does it matter if he's a Muslim? Is there some kind of rule that Muslims can't be presidents?

Eight years ago, there was speculation that many people failed to vote for Gore because his running mate was Jewish. (I felt this was a load of codswallop, myself; I felt that people who wouldn't vote for a Jew probably wouldn't vote for Gore anyway.) And we weren't at war with Israel. We are at war with a Muslim country--two of them, if you bother remembering Afghanistan.
Besides, the closest the US has ever come to electing a non-Christian is Thomas Jefferson, who was listed in my textbook when I was a child as a "Unitarian," presumably because nobody felt like explaining "deism" to eight-year-olds.

So what does it matter if he's a Muslim? Is there some kind of rule that Muslims can't be presidents? Quite the opposite, actually. Religious freedom is one of the things we are supposed to hold most dear. Yet, The Right likes to use scare tactics to get the populace to vote for conservative candidates. Obama (sounds like Osama!!!!) - middle name Hussein!!! dark skin - African heritage -- must be Muslim -- Muslims want to destroy 'merica! That's the nonsense we put up with.

So what does it matter if he's a Muslim? Is there some kind of rule that Muslims can't be presidents? Ha ha. I can tell you don't live in the States. BertL, it took a hundred years before America elected a Catholic president, even though Catholics made up about forty percent of voters. I've never seen so much mudslinging as I do in American politics, although they do in better than here in Canada. As it is, the politicians up here are plain dumb mudslingers, whereas in the States they are intelligent mudslingers. ***NOW PLAYING*** The Sensational Alex Harvey Band - The Hot City Symphony

Well, what I'm wonderin' is, should you vote for Obama, after all, he is a Christian you know. ***NOW PLAYING*** Mose Allison - Young ManMost of my friends are Christian. Most US citizens claim to be Christian. It will be a long time before we elect a non-Christian. Speaking of: Here is what Obama said on the Christian Broadcast Network last year (I posted this before): "Whatever we once were, we’re no longer just a Christian nation; we are also a Jewish nation, a Muslim nation, a Buddhist nation, a Hindu nation, and a nation of non-believers. We should acknowledge this and realize that when we’re formulating policies from the state house to the Senate floor to the White House, we’ve got to work to translate our reasoning into values that are accessible to every one of our citizens, not just members of our own faith community." Here is what Pat Robertson had to say in response: “I think what he says is dangerous. I think that it has a veneer of sophistication and it has a veneer of moderation, a veneer of intelligence, but underneath it he basically is selling out, well, the origins of our nation." That's right. Religious tolerance means selling out the origin of the United States.

FOX "News" is actually not a news organization, at all. They are clearly a mouthpiece for right wingnut conservatives (I can actually show this). During the tease for a segment on the "fist bump" everyone has been talking about between Michelle and Barack Obama, FOX News' E.D. Hill says "A fist bump? A pound? A terrorist fist jab? ... We'll show you some interesting body communication and find out what it really says."mediamatters.org/items/200806060007That's right, a FOX "News" commentator blandly inserts "terrorist" into a discussion about Michelle and Barack Obama's affectionate fist bump. Here it is (this happened here in my town): www.cnn.com/video/#/video/politics/2008/06/04/moos.political.fist.bump.cnnYep, there is no doubt "terrorist" springs to mind watching that video.

Here is a montage of some of the things FOX "News" has said about Obama. Note that their attacks are almost 100% personal and contain very little substance: foxattacks.com/blog/573-fox-attacks-obamaIt is one thing to go after a politician on the issues, but this is something entirely different.

I honestly don't get why everyone is talking about it. They pounded fists and smiled at each other and it was over in about one second. It was a very youthful moment, so maybe that's it. We haven't seen a lot of youth on the presidential campaign trail in the last few years.

I just looked them up on YouTube (saw "Next") -- great stuff. Here's a funny vid of of Fox & Friends' trying to smear Obama: youtube.com/watch?v=RWVGmyyhx8g[EDIT: actually that video isn't so good. The second clips in particular are more similar than the commentator -- TheYoungTurks -- makes it out to be and he talks over the part where the Fox host is saying that if they let it go on longer it sounds even more similar. Anyway... As far as Fox being right-wing, it's my understanding that Rupert Murdoch was a major contributor to both Hilary and Obama's campaigns.
