The first episode was Sunday, June 8. This is a six hour mini-series that shows a lot of "never before seen" footage from the Mercury program all the way to the Shuttle. It has behind the scenes stuff, training, as well as actual mission footage. The best part here is that the film has been transfered to high definition and the stuff so far has been absolutely stunning. This can be seen on the regular Discovery channel (SD) also. They have shown Ed White's Gemini spacewalk, Gene Cernan's (failed) spacewalk and Buzz Aldrin's (successful) spacewalk all in HD. (on a side note: I didn't know that there were so many failed spacewalks until Buzz came along on Gemini 12. He was an experienced deep sea diver who took his knowledge and skill in the water and brought it to space. All of the previous attempts failed bacause the astronaut became so fatigued that they could not complete the walk. After Buzz showed how it could be done and with his help in training the future astronauts there was never a failed spacewalk again.) There have also been numerous Mercury and Gemini launches and also quite a few spectacular failures, again, all in HD. There have been some previews of future episodes that show footage from the moon all transferred to HD. This is the stuff that I can't wait to see. I have the Spacecraft Films "Apollo 17" DVD which is quite impressive but this HD transfer puts it to shame. This series is not to be missed! Of course what this all points to is that this is just a very well kept record of how they faked it all.

Watching it Sunday I felt that anyone who feels Apollo was "too dangerous to attempt" obviously doesn't know anything about Mercury and Gemini. The shots of Gemini 6 and 7 approaching to within about 20 feet of each other, with an astronaut clearly visible waving out the window at the other capsule, were some of my favorite from the first episode.

Buzz showed his ingenuity on his walk. And he came prepared because he knew how much trouble previous astronauts had.
From a previous post I made: Remember Aldrin bringing along wrist tethers, foot restraints and portable handholds to assist in the Gemini 12 spacewalk?
It feels so great to post on a thread again that is actually about Apollo. ;D

Or Mercury and Gemini, at the moment. I notice they captioned Neil Armstrong twice - once as "X-15 Pilot" and once as "Gemini 8". Those aren't the mission he's most famous for, of course. Gene Krantz was wearing his white "Apollo 13" vest throughout his interviews.

Darn, this show doesn't seem to be on Discovery Channel canada. Darn!
Of course I knew that. I should have said 'space' instead of Apollo. If the DVD is indeed HiDef then in a few weeks I'll buy the DVD. Seems like a keeper anyway...it is also coming out on BlueRay on July 24.

Ha ha, already come across this comment on the web about the series: So Discovery Channel will play dumb ignoring the fact that there is evidence that shows that The "first time" man went to the Moon, was a total fake and it was all staged in a TV studio. Check out in YouTube some of those videos, they're even funny, and there have been TV programs that show many details on the original videos like: no stars, no depth, no correct shadows, the way dust moves, many, many details. Who the hell was shooting while Armstrong was leaving the module, and who shot from the Moon when the module took off?, but I won't say more, see those "bloopers" in YouTube and judge by yourselves.tv.ign.com/articles/879/879554p1.html?RSSwhen2008-06-05_163000&RSSid=879554

Darn, this show doesn't seem to be on Discovery Channel canada. Darn! Yeah, that sucks. Hopefully it will find it's way to Canada some day soon. Better yet, I hope it is going to be sold on DVD. I've heard that Neil Armstrong participated in this series. So next time a hoax believer says "Armstrong never does interviews!" we'll have this to point to (along with all the other interviews he has done over the years).

Hey Ginnie, BluRay is HiDef so you're gonna get what you want. I've just got to buck up for a BluRay player and I can own this baby for good too!

Hey Ginnie, BluRay is HiDef so you're gonna get what you want. I've just got to buck up for a BluRay player and I can own this baby for good too! Buy a Playstation 3 then. Put Linux on it and then you've got a complete media station with Blue Ray, Internet and Computing capabilities. Ubuntu Linux has a flavour of linux just for the PS3. Alas, I don't have the money for a PS3, so regular DVD will have to do Supposedly the DVD release date is July 10. BlueRay comes out on July 24.

I imagine the "When we left the Earth" series has been great so far?
I wish I could see it, but we don't get Discovery Channel at the house I'm renting.
And my folks seemingly would rather tell me what they saw on "Ghost Hunters". Sheesh.
Aldrin was a deep sea diver? With all his experience, he reminds me of Jamie from "Mythbusters". I've got to read up more on Dr. Rendevous.

I ask Discovery US when it was going to be shown in Australia, but they said the Asia-Pacific programming was done by Discovery Australia. I e-mailed Discovery Australia to ask when it would air, and... silence.
