I had mentioned before how my son was going to University this fall. Well, he just started at University of Toronto a few weeks ago. He hopes eventually to get his MBA in Business/Commerce. As U of T is in the top ten in the world in this area of learning, I am quite confident that he will get a good education! I am very, very proud of my boy young man. His subjects this term are math, French, Economics (I think) and ...and....and...Science Fiction Film (his elective).
His residence is right in the middle of downtown Toronto, and he loves it. We had to make two trips to bring him all his "essentials": LCD TV, PS3, Computer, Home Theater, Laptop, games, movies, CD's...oh, and some other stuff called clothing and bedding.
I am missing him a lot. Up to this point, the longest I hadn't seen him was about six days. He'll come out of U of T with about 80 - 100 grand in debt. Isn't that terrible? We can pitch in, but most of it he has to get grants and loans. Luckily, his scholarships have totalled $4200 so far this year, so that helps. His residence alone this year is $10,600 ! That includes meals.
I am very proud of him. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

I found college affordable only by living at home and having my parents kick in on half of my tuition. By having next to no social life and relying on parental charity I didn't have any studen loans to pay back.

I was lucky in that when I started at Polytechnic (it's a University now) the government still did 100% grants for people on low incomes, which we definitely were. I feel really sorry for people now who come out with their newly-minted degress and thousands of pounds of debt over their heads already. What a way to start a career.

My employer has offered to pay for my university fees if i choose to study mechanical engineering. Part time, while working full time is a bit of a commitment, but I am giving this some serious thought at the moment!

My cousin who is a teacher noted how students complaining about high tuition fees are usually in course like philosophy, history etc. Students in business or studying to be a lawyer never complain because its reasonably assured that they will be able to pay in back without that much difficulty. My son's not complaining.

Med students have been known to complain about high tuition fees, too.

Congrats to both you and your son Ginnie, you for obviously doing a good job quarterbacking (in the parental sense) and your son for taking your "hand-off" and running with it. Guess you can tell it's football season, eh?

My theory is that they are all so busy learning something, they don't have time to practice. ;D
