Saddam guilty - sentenced to death
Baghdad (dpa) - Ousted Iraqi president Saddam Hussein was sentenced to death by hanging Sunday after being convicted by the Iraqi criminal court of crimes against humanity.
In an act of defiance, Saddam refused to stand as the judge pronounced his sentence.
The former Iraqi dictator then finally took to his feet, shouting repeatedly in a firm level voice: "Long live the Umma (nation). Down with the traitors. Allahu Akbar (God is great)! We are the people of )this country)," disturbing the judge - who had to raise his voice over Saddam's - as he read his sentence.

We hope the same destiny awaits for the Syrians and their tools in Lebanon who killed the former prime minister last year, after the UN court is set . Saddam and his sons did unbelievable criminal acts against the Iraqi people. He deserves to get killed.

I have to say, I set very strict limitations on when I approve of the death penalty, and I'm not entirely sure he meets them. (I also have a very hard time saying that anyone deserves to die, because I'm quite certain that, by some people's standards, so do I.)
Criterion one is definitely met--we do know for certain that he is the one who did it. We have all the criteria I require except DNA, and I have to say, I don't require DNA in this case, because I really, really doubt it's some kind of Saddam Hussein impersonator, and the rest of the evidence is overwhelming.
Two. Is the crime heinous enough? Yes, quite. For the slaughter of the Kurds alone.
Three is where I hit difficulty. Are we in danger of the person doing it again? I really, really don't think so. I don't see him killing other people in prison. I don't see him escaping, and I'm fairly sure he wouldn't be broken out, either, though I don't entirely rule it out, either. And even if he did manage to get out--the alternative to death to me is life without the possibility of parole--I don't see him managing to be dictator of a country again any time soon, and I don't know how much he was in to homicide on the individual scale.
However, my doubts notwithstanding, there's the figurehead/martyr dilemma. In which sense is he more dangerous?

While I appreciate Gillian’s stand on the death penalty. In this case I’ll just say, good riddance.
Lionking, I do hope that justice, independence and prosperity find their way back to your country.

The UN will never execute anyone, no matter the crime.
If Saddam were not executed it would devalue the lives of his victims.

what is PC? thnx . Rumours say the december report of Brammertz will name people. Let us hope this is true. Can't wait untill the coalition of 14th of march celebrates this by demonstrations on the road. I hope my dad will let me go with them if this happens. I feel like tearing all pictures of Bashar Alassad and his previous Head of Intelligence in Lebanon Rostom Ghazeleh, as well as the photos of the Syrian tools in Lebanon. I did have fights with my relative who claimed it is Israel who killed the Prime Minister, so I can't wait untill I get the revenge. I know, but I was referring to the mere judgement that he went through and conviction by evidence that he did kill.

PC - Politically Correct. In general, the movement to replace language terms some find offensive with euphamisms. Examples: African-American for Negro or Black, Native American for Indian, Insurgent for Terrorist. In this context it also means avoiding actions that may have once been considered lawful and acceptable but are considered distasteful in the current political climate.

I don't know, which is more humane, a quick death or being locked in a 4x4 cage for the rest of their natural life. That said I'm only for the death penalty in very specific cases, where the proof is absolute, not just reasonable doubt, but no possible doubt (ie they were seen do it by 10 people, it was filmed and they were still standing over the body when the police arrived,) the crime is particularly nasty, and the offender shows no capability or ability of reforming in any way shape or form. I strongly disagree with executing people 20 or 30 years later when they have radically changed their lives while in prison, to me that is just rediculous. It's not justice, it's revenge.

Saddam and his sons did unbelievable criminal acts against the Iraqi people. He deserves to get killed. Here in the US you don't tend to hear of his atocities (i.e. losing Olympic soccer team). His kids, deceased, were evil too. Folks have a hard time recognizing, and dealing with, evil people in our country. Still, silly "reality" television shows are the rage here. False conflict amidst the sometimes awful real world. Maybe "pretend" is more comfortable. Meanwhile, you live in the middle of it...God Bless.

I agree that death is undesirable, and I would wanted him to be imprisoned forever, but I think the ones who have the say are the people whose families were killed. They rejoiced the killing. I have read things thta didn't let me sleep well at night about his criminality and his sons' criminality. Uday was a real devil who escaped from hell. He raped lots of women and tortured lots of ppl, and killed others haphazardly, just bcz he felt like doing it. I don't know if the victims still alive will be able to forget the tragic times he gave them. Anyhow, I hope the new year would be better for the Iraqis and us, and all ppl as well.

The problem with this is that someone would be disgusted whatever happened. Kill him, and all those opposed to the death penalty are disgusted. Imprison him forever at the taxpayers' expense, and they are all disgusted that their tax goes to maintaining him in relative comfort. Give him too primitive a cell and human rights groups kick up a stink. Give him too much comfort and everyone else does.
There is no easy way to deal with such people.
