Apollo 13 launched at 13:13 CST on April 11. I know. He somehow got a launch mixed up with an oxygen tank explosion. It reminds me of Cosmic Dave's claim that "On the 13th hour of the 13th day of the 13th Apollo Mission, disaster struck when an oxygen tank exploded." Apollo 13 lasted six days. Also, Apollo 13 was technically the 14th Apollo mission. ( SOURCE) Cz

All this talk about secret symbols representing death in Apollo 13, and all three astronauts came back alive! Or... did they? <cue Twilight Zone theme>

I found this image on some wacko site in which you can see the pressure suit without the beta cloth outer garment. As you can see there are no mechanical devices at all helping the astronauts with their flexiblity, and there is nothing that looks like a CVJ on the knuckles of the gloves. Anyone that claims otherwise is imagining things or a paid NASA shill.

Actually what that does demonstrate is where classic myth structure came from and why (apart from the blithering innacuracies) Apollo 13 is such a compelling event.

I want to thank you all for your postings. My friend is not stupid but I can't continue arguing with him over this. He simply will not accept the facts and agree with Whoopie Goldberg. He is not stupid and is very intelligent. I am saddened by what has happened to him. Today he sent me 14 emails about the camera and how the radiation etc. would not allow it to work. I pray that God will guide him out of the grip of the lunatics. He has gone from a clear thinking individual to someone who believes: 1) A missile hit the pentagon on 911 . 2) We had a black president before Obama. 3) We had 10-15 presidents before George Washington 4) We never landed on the moon. 5) etc... All this because he sits and watches Youtube and reads conspiracy sites. I am proud to have him as a friend but sad that this occurred. I will show him this website now to show the work that was done to try and help him. Perhaps he will be able to follow some of your suggestions. He will not join because he believes that the government is keeping tabs on all comments on the internet and will use it against you eventually when "they come for you. God bless you all. ... I can't continue arguing with him over this. It sounds like your friend has gone off the conspiracy deep end, and as sad as it is to give up and abandon him, I don't think you have any other choice. Arguing with him further is apt to be like banging your head against a wall. We've seen people like this before and the more you argue with them, the more delusional they get. They simply refuse to give up their belief, so trying to combat their arguments facts and reason just leads them down more and more ludicrous and improbable tangents. It's a familiar and all too often pattern of behavior.

For those who may not get the joke, the "wacko sites" we're refering to are those of fellow forum members and friends ... Just a few playful jabs being thrown.

G'day Thequestion It must be a saddening and frustrating experience to be going through this. May I suggest that if your friend is concerned about the Internet, he could instead write letters. One person he may like to write to is Charlie Duke, one of the astronauts who walked on the Moon, and also a devout Christian. His address is: Charlie Duke Enterprises PO Box 310345 New Braunfels, TX 78131

I want to thank you all for your postings. My friend is not stupid but I can't continue arguing with him over this. The only way to deal with this kind of situation and remain friends is to set limits on the discussion. Tell him that the woo woo stuff is off limits and keep engaging him where he remains rational. Hopefully you can reinforce that side of him. Also remember his son is probably concerned that his dad is getting weird. The more you can help your friend to be rational around his son, the better and you can be an example to the boy about how to set limits.

If I can derail things a minute . . . . 2) We had a black president before Obama. Which one? Okay, this one gets complicated in that he is, from a certain point of view, right. From another, more accurate point of view, however, he's quite wrong. Between the initial separation from Britain as represented in the Declaration of Independence and the true formation of the United States as we know them by the Constitution, the United States was ruled by the Articles of Confederation. These were, for many excellent reasons, very bad at governing anything or anyone, which I won't go into here. (Well, we'll start with the fact that all governmental decisions had to be unanimous.) Under the Articles of Confederation, there was a post called the President of the United States in Congress Assembled. All people who held that office did so before the Constitution and hence before George Washington was President. So far, so good. However, here's where the "and yet totally wrong" bit comes in. As indicated by the title, the President of the United States in Congress Assembled was not, in fact, the ruler of the country. He had no actually authority over, um, anything, really. He had less authority over even the Continental Congress than the Speaker of the House does over the House of Representatives. The men (and, yes, there were ten of them!) who held that office were not anything like presidents by modern imagining.
