Hi
I've been following the debate on Jarrah White's new LRO video, which is fairly Jarrah-esque by the way. But this had me howling.
The debate got on to Jodrell Bank. Someone made a comment that Jodrell Bank tracked Apollo. One of the HBs asked:
"Did Bank tell you personally that he tracked Apollo?"
Oh dear...
Take it easy all. TK

Fantastic. Easy mistake to make though, Jodrell is such a common name.
We should start a thread for proper hardcore idiocy like this.

We should start a thread for proper hardcore idiocy like this. Yes, that would be a great idea. I think Jordell Bank has to be my favourite to date. This is closely followed by JW taking a hard time over his film speed theory, and his error that 1.5 * 0.5 = 1. Duane Doggy Daman was quick to Jarrah's defence and said: "What difference does it make what speed he increased the film by?"

Here's a good one I found on an IMDb forum (about Whoopi Goldberg of all places... ) "How about the time delay between communications being only 2.4 seconds when THEY-ARE-ON-THE-MOON ------ 240,000 MILES AWAY??? " If anyone's interested, here's the link to the post: www.imdb.com/name/nm0000155/board/nest/143392806Cz

Oh dear, that thread is embarrassing to the human ability to work things out. I suspect hormones and a young un out of skool?
Then from another, contradictory statements on the Soviet ability to track.

Another good one from the IMDb forums. Can't remember what the specific thread. Good chance it may have been "pruned" last time they cleaned up their threads. Someone asked why the astronauts couldn't have used the batteries from Fred Hayse's tape player to power any of the LM systems on Apollo 13. Pretty sure I fielded and answer as well as Jay. Cz

I read Yahoo Answers and I'm surprised that we ever made it out of the Middle Ages. That has got to be the dregs of human understanding. I have seen a few well-informed people attempt to stem the tide of ignorance, but it's a big tide. And what's also depressing is when the original asker ignores all the logical, well-considered replies and selects one of the ignorant ones as his best answer.

The strangest claim I have seen was posted on youtube (where else?) by some conspiracy theorist who stated that astronauts in a vacuum would have exploded due to dark energy and the expansion of the universe. He was serious.

The strangest claim I have seen was posted on youtube (where else?) by some conspiracy theorist who stated that astronauts in a vacuum would have exploded due to dark energy and the expansion of the universe. He was serious. I guess the parts of the universe we hang out in aren't expanding. Regarding the whole Jodrell Bank thing, though, if that's the only slip up that person made, I'd let it slide. As a persuasive tool, I don't think exploiting such a slip is going to get you much mileage. Of the people who know what Jodrell Bank is, how many of them are committed hoax believers or fence sitters?

Note whose site this person on Yahoo Answers used as evidence of a hoax: "and Only two men walked on the Moon during each Apollo mission, yet there are photos in which the astronaut reflected in the visor has no camera. Who took the shot? www.braeunig.us/space/pics/hoax/photo10.jpg." Crazy. Edit: This question got deleted, maybe the asker realized how silly it was.
