I have a query about a claim made by someone else about AS16-107-17442 In it he claimed that there was a "nail" sticking out of what seems to me to be the probe attached to the bottom of the landing pad. See this : www.myimgs.net/images/mynf.jpgAbout a third of the way down. What appears to be a handle on the end of it seems to blow that one away, but I am still curious as to what that is.. Are there any other images showing this? Anyone know?

My guess? It's part of the latching mechanism that holds the probe in a stowed position while the LM is in translunar flight. That's what it is...

He believes it is a 'nail' and would 'puncture' the astronauts suits. Yes this is the level he is at. Anyway, cheers for the pics

Oh dear. I was at least hoping for a slightly more sophisticated "no-one uses nails to build spacecraft therefore this 'nail' is clear evidence that the whole thing is a prop" type argument, but I guess you can't beat the old "two-inch nail punctures three-inch suit" trick.
Speaking of which, wasn't the moon full of, what were they called now...ah yes, rocks? Of various shapes and sizes and a lot of them pointed, and very few of them directly under the landing gear where no-one would be moving about anyway...
