1 -1 NZ vs Slovakia. Not bad since they were ranked 34 and we are 78. Our first WC goal and our first WC point! This is already the best we have ever done, and we're only one game in!

The FIA 78th ranked team has become a bit of a Jamacian Bobsled Team Story by matching it with the rest of its pool, ranked 34th, 5th, and up next number 31. It'll be another hard one for our boys, and beating a team ranked 47 places higher than them really would be a dream come true, though we did pull off a win over Serbia (ranked 15th) in the pre-cup warm up (of course we lost to Mexico (17th), Australia (20th), Slovenia (25th), and Chile (18th) as well.)
I have to admit I'm pretty doubtful that they'll may it to the second round, but then again I was doubtful they'd get anything but a drumming by the Azuries, and I was wrong there. Would certainly be great if they did progress, but hey, anything is good, as long as we end up with more points than the Auzzies!

The Kaka yellow-red card incident is the kind of crap that drives me away from "the beautiful game" - beautiful indeed.... If the ref saw it then he'd know that there was diving involved. If he didn't see how can he call a penalty? Disgusting.

What I can't stand is that nobody seems to be using video footage. All of these matches are captured by tons of cameras; it shouldn't be that hard to hang up a huge screen somewhere so the referee can watch the footage and see what's going on more clearly.

If they started using video replay then you'd have to add 30 minutes of extra time onto each half...

"Cheer up!" they said, "It could be worse!" So I did, and it was.

The funnuest thing was Kewell urging the ref to look at the big screen, which promptly proved that he had indeed handballed it...

Well nine hours to go before the biggest disappointment in NZ history...
Unfortunately Australia won their last game, so to do better than they did now, we have to beat Paragauy, a team ranked 47 places higher then us. If they do, it will not only be the first time that a New Zealand team has won a game at the WC, but also the first time they have gained entrance to the WC play offs. While they did manage it at the last Confederation Cup, I have to admit I'll be highly surprised if I wake up tomorrow morning to the news that they won. I think that regardless of the result, we can take home a lot from this campaign, drawing with Italy in a world cup match could be the Footballing highlight for little ole NZ for a long time to come.
Cheers to the All Whites.

ITALY OUT !!!! can't believe it. And so are we. Still it was a dream run that no-one would have dared to predict before the tournament. We go home unbeaten and with 3 points! I have to admit that I would have felt more cheated if Italy had gone through, because we would have beaten them but for their cheating dive in the box. I do feel that it's time that FIFA caught up with the rest of the world's major sports and introduced technology into the game to help clean up the hollywoods and diving. They are so bad now that a skilled actor can milk a critical game turning penalty or even (as in the case of Kaka) have a player sent off. It's not a good look for what is supposed to be a professional game, and needs to be fixed. Still even saying that, our boys come home having finished ahead of Italy (3 points vs 2) and without a defeat, despite ranking 44 places lower than any other team in their pool. Unlike the players of France, and Italy (both previous winners), the All Whites will be returning heads held high and will be getting a Heroes reception at the Airport. Look out world, 2014 is only four years away and just like a terminator, we'll be back.

At least you were in it to begin with.... I'm watching the Italy-Slovakia game replay - I just gotta see them lose! Right now an Italian player is writhing in pain after being roughed up by the pink fairy. What a game.
