Yeah, I just saw this myself. I notice that he's not necessarily directing though - he's executive producing. And what's this about a Hobbit sequel? The Lord of the Rings is the sequel to the Hobbit, and they already made that one.

I'm guessing that they are planning to use some of Tolkien's unfinished work and notes to try and bridge the gap between the Hobbit and LotR

You could make a decent prequel to The Lord of the Rings by following Aragorn's adventures in Rohan, Gondor, and elsewhere before he even met Frodo, but I'm not sure I would call that a sequel to The Hobbit. For one thing, there wouldn't be any actual hobbits in it.

Well in LotR it does suggest that Bilbo did have other adventures between returning to Hobbiton and his adopting Frodo, so....

Jackson will have to make them up pretty much from scratch then, since I'm pretty sure Tolkien didn't write any more about them than that.

Either that or they have gained access to some of Tolkien's notes and unfinished works from his son and figure there is enough to put something togther. The other possiblity is that they plan to split the Hobbit into 2 parts

I suppose The Hobbit could be done in two parts. That wasn't the impression I got from the press release but it could be the case.
Since Christopher Tolkien has published books and books of Tolkien's notes and drafts, and none of them are for adventures set between The Hobbit and LotR, I doubt anything substantial could be put together from them. And filming parts of The Silmarillion wouldn't really be a "sequel" to The Hobbit either.

There's a whole side-action going on in the during the Hobbit. While Bilbo & the seven dwarfs are doing their thing, Gandalf and the White Council (including Saruman) were moving against "The Necromancer" in the Tower of Dol Goldur (in the southwest corner of the Mirkwood). They apparently drove The Necromancer (who was revealed to be Sauron) out, but he relocated to Mordor and the rebuilt tower of Barad Dur.
Saruman was still technically on the good-guy's side, but his ulterior motive was that Dol Goldur was near Gladden Fields, where The One Ring was lost. He didn't want Sauron finding The Ring before he did.
[Edited to add] Woo-hoo!

If they depict the side-action then Bilbo's quest might be seen as the side-action it really was in comparison to the important world events of the time. It should probably stay off-stage.

My understanding is that the first movie will be Bilbo's journey, and the second will be the larger arc that links to LOTR.

Well, there are about 60 years between the end of The Hobbit and Bilbo's birthday party in The Fellowship of the Ring, so there is room for stories. Bilbo supposedly didn't do all that much during that time, though.

For a second I thought this thread would be about Michael Jackson being cast for a role in The Hobbit, hehe.

He would be perfect for the plastic mutant. Oh wait, there is no plastic mutant in the book. How about Gollum then?
