Things get too serious around here sometimes, so here is a thread for non-political, non serious topics, completely inexplicable and possibly funny things.
And the first is an actual headline for an AP news story that I found to be inexplicable:
Man in light shooting hands out bears
For the life of me, I could not figure out how to read that.

completely inexplicable and possibly funny things.Huh? That's what I've been doing ever since I got here - except for Reality of Apollo posts. Last night and overnight we received about 25cm of snow. I get a kick out of all the cars on the road that don't have snow tires. When will they learn? Next year it will be law - all cars must have snow tires from November till April. Or it might be law, I'm not sure. Only 22% of drivers in my province use snow tires. In Quebec, you get a freebie accident with your insurance company if f you have snow tires. So 90% of people in Quebec use them. The other 10% cause 37% of the accidents. Who's reading what? Presently I'm reading the Neil Armstrong biography, a book about the Cannes film festival, A History of Space Vehicles, Cosmic Phenomena, The Defence Never Rests (about retired NHL players suing the NHL to get their proper pension money) and for bathroom reading, WIRED magazine. Who's watching what? Recently viewed videos: parts of my NASA collection, Paths of Glory, New York Doll, Ravenous, Bowie's Midnight Special:The 1980 Floor Show, and the Ironman trailer (awesome!). Who's listening to what? Recently played: Wolfmother, Robert Plant & Allison Krauss, Sly and the Family Stone and Iggy & the Stooges. Who's Painting what? Bloody nuthin' You all know I don't like crossthreading but this is really funny: If you give those Ninja guys sugar in their 'tea' they go bouncing around like grasshoppers on speed. It's really funny to watch. I had to submit a bill for my broken ceiling fan. I hate it when... Okay, so I subscribe to a certain Cable company. I get cable and internet. They got my business alright? But that's not enough! So I get emails from them trying to get me to 'bundle' all my services. They want me to switch my cellphone and home phone over. GRRRR. Not only the emails, but they've called me four times at home trying to get me to do the same thing... oh, plus they mail me stuff too. I hate it when... I get soliciters calling me on my cellphone. So now I'm paying for irritating, unwanted calls too. ;D wdmundt, you wanted inexplicable...

Oh yes, that's much more fun.
My dog broke a nail (claw) last weekend, so I had to have it mostly removed on Monday. They put her under for the surgery and coming out of it she made the most horrific, sad, gut-wrenching howl I have ever heard -- and it went on for hours. I had to leave her with my girlfriend when I went back to work Monday night and it was almost more than I could handle to walk away from her like that. She was much better when I got home. I took the bandage off today and she is completely back to normal.
I am currently reading "The Making of Star Wars," which covers just the making of the first film. It is a very interesting story about studio executives trying to shut it down and filmmakers reinventing how movies were made. Lots of interesting things if you are a Star Wars fan or film buff or both.
I'm still working on putting the finishing touches on my feature film, "Atomic Nightmare." It is a horror movie set in the 1950s that also looks like it was made in the 1950s. Getting the last bits done is going to give me an ulcer.
I recently saw the first-ever piece of very expensive original art that said "buy me!" And it's a lot of money. I've bought some not-so-expensive pieces in the past, but never something that was the equivalent cost of, say, a motorcycle. I haven't bought it, but I'm still thinking about it....
My newest addition to the music collection is the soundtrack to the 2002 film "Solaris." It is one of the most original soundtracks I have ever heard.
I hate: winter.

I haven't bought it, but I'm still thinking about it..a $500 used motorcycle, or a $20,000 really good new motorcycle? Geesh, and I can't get two hundred bucks for one of mine. The most I've ever spent on a painting is $400. That was of course before I started painting myself. But that painting I still love, and would not part with it.: Approx. 36 X 24 inches. I know you're not supposed to photograph the frame with it, but I wanted to show all of what I see when I look at it. It was done by an unknown Russian artist.

That kind of puzzled me, but now I understand. Looks mighty darn good - 50's cliches and all. ;D ;D I'll take another, more observant look later.
So it looks like both you and Kiwi has a lot of patience and dedication. Something I lack, sorry to say.

Here's the lyrics to a song I wrote about 30 years ago:
The Stranger
I once said something funny, but nobody laughed you see. Alone in a crowded room, with deaf ears surrounding me...
I heard their tales repeated on, and saw their grins wearing thin, On the ice of their fragile pond, waters I could not dive in...
Their voices loud, would cram the space But I was in, outer space again.
Staring at me, they all shook their heads Wondering how I became the state I was in. And sleeping, in my separate bed. Whiles thoughts they could not taste filled my mind again.
Me the stranger, with watching eyes. Sitting among them, their boasting cries again...
Staring at me, they all shook their heads Wondering how I became the state I was in. And sleeping, in my separate bed. Whiles thoughts they could not taste filled my mind again.

I love doggies; I have always had the ability to just bond with dogs and hearing the pain to them causes me pain. It's like someone screeching down a blackboard (if you are affected by that; I am not). I hope you gave them a good cuddle!

Is there a tune this goes with? I've been trying to figure it out. Did you ever record this? I'm currently starting work on a music video for an artist here in the Twin Cities. The real challenge is to not show exactly what it is that her lyrics suggest -- and to come up with something beyond the specific content.

She has inoperable cancer that was diagnosed last July. The outlook was for something in the 4-8 week range. It has been nearly 7 months now, so she is doing well beyond anyone's expectations. In fact, if you didn't know about it, there is almost no way to tell that she is sick by just looking at her. She still plays with our other dog, walks with her tail up and eats like a horse. Knock on wood. Madison Lily and Madison Lily

Is there a tune this goes with? I've been trying to figure it out. Did you ever record this?I recorded it on cassette tape years ago. I've since converted it to an mp3. Doesn't matter much because I could sing it right now if you want me too. Give me a few moments... ( pulls out guitar starts singing and playing second chorus done last line ) Okay. Done. So yes, there is a melody that goes with this. ;D EDIT: I just noticed that the lyrics as posted previously are not all in the proper order. I will fix that. What the heck, I'll upload the original song. Recording on a crappy cassette 25 years ago, using a crappy guitar. There is some dropout in the middle of the song, but it comes back. I won't apologize for my voice, it's the only one I got. ;D pauljhalley.110mb.com/music/01%20-%20Track%201.ogg

Hey, wdmundt, I didn't know your dogs could talk!
Neat trick.
I looked at three of your Atomic Nightmare trailers. Looks promising. Where did you get your soundtrack? And when is the release date? I guess what I'm asking is if you can give out some information regarding your movie like: how is it filmed, edited, did you write the script, who is acting in it - that sort of thing.

Lily talks all the time. Madison talks once in a great while -- and then she really means it.
The soundtrack for Atomic Nightmare is original, by an artist named Jason Feder. We shot 99% of it in Ames, Iowa -- which is directly south of where I now live -- St. Paul, MN. It was shot in 24P on a Canon XL2 and edited on Final Cut Pro. It is from a screenplay that I wrote. The actors are mostly people I had worked with on other projects -- though the female lead, Melanie Hall, was new to me. I'm a big fan of the original "The Thing From Another World," and always wanted to do something that looked like it. The story is different, but it is about an Air Force crew in the arctic -- and we even found a real C-47 to use.
The reason it is not done yet is that we have a bunch of effects still to do....

wdmundt, if you're interested, the Discovery Channel's Mythbusters is about training malmute huskies. It's on right now from 6-7 EST.
