On another forum that I participate in a Brit. went on about how Bush’s authorization of surveillance of Americans without judicial review was a sign that the US was in a situation similar to that of Germany after the Reichstag Fire and many Americans agreed with him. Although I have a very strong dislike for Bush and did not approve of his ‘illegal’ wiretapping program I think such comparisons are absurdly overblown. Also if I’m not mistaken in Britain the government can place wiretaps without warrants in ‘national security’ cases, hold people without charging them for several days and can restrict the press in ways that wouldn’t be allowed in the US. Is that true?
I would also be interested to find out about the government’s power to conduct surveillance without warrants, hold people without charge and restrict press coverage in other countries.

Heh, over here the SIS can't even sneeze without a warrent. It's rather funny really. Recently there was a News article claiming thy'd be illegallly bugging certain groups and there was a big stink until it was shown that the "informants" had make it all up. Considering that one of them was NZ's best known CT, the paper shouldn't really of touched it with a bargepole without further independant confirmation. lol. Talk about egg on faces.
