I'm new to this forum but I just started hearing different ideas about NASA possibly faking the moon landings. I've been checking out sights like this one and nasa.gov to find an answer to this question and was hoping some in the forums might be able to tell me the answer. In the BBC news archives it has July 21st 1969 article about Neil Armstrong walking on the moon. news.bbc.co.uk/onthisday/hi/dates/stories/july/21/newsid_2635000/2635845.stm It says that he described the surface as being like powdered charcoal and the landing craft left a crater about a foot deep. None of the pictures that I've seen show a foot deep crater under the lander. And all the information that I found on redzero.demon.co.uk says there was no crater at all. Was their a crater or not?

I don’t recall every hearing the “about a foot deep” comment before, nonetheless, the surface was definitely eroded by the engine exhaust. You shouldn’t expect to see a crater like a blast crater; any depression will be more gradual and subtle. The following is a photo from Apollo 11 clearly showing erosion and discoloration under the engine nozzle. It looks to me like there is a slight depression in the center with gradually slopping sides and rays emanating radially outward. Here are some better scans of the same picture: www.hq.nasa.gov/pao/History/alsj/a11/as11-40-5921.jpgwww.hq.nasa.gov/pao/History/alsj/a11/as11-40-5921HR.jpg

I'd never heard of Armstrong making that comment before either. But I'm a novice with Apollo info. That's the exact same picture I've seen before and I don't see a crater at all. It still makes me wonder why he said their was a foot deep crater left.

He didn't. The article has it wrong. Since they are "quoting" what he said on the surface it's easy enough to check out in the ALSJ (Apollo Lunar Surface Journal) 109:26:16 Armstrong: Okay. The descent engine did not leave a crater of any size. It has about 1 foot clearance on the ground. We're essentially on a very level place here. I can see some evidence of rays emanating from the descent engine, but a very insignificant amount. They have mixed up the clearance with a crater size.

... I don't see a crater at all. Neither do I, though it appears to me that perhaps a couple inches of material has been eroded. It looks like the dust has been blown away revealing the harder underlying material.

In an earlier draft he was "THX1138." Still that way in the ghost-written novel adaption.
