The UK Independent TV network has, as part of its 50th anniversary celebrations, just conducted a poll of the top news images of the last 50 years, "The Shots that Shook the World".
Apollo 11 came in 2nd, after the 9/11 attack and followed by the 2004 Tsunami, the JFK assassination and England winning the (Soccer) World Cup in 1966.
Apart from a disputed goal, the last of these, AFAIK, appears to lack a conspiracy theory. Is it too late to start one?

Well there is the urban legend about the disputed goal: the linesman was Russian, and is reputed, when asked by the referee whether the ball had crossed the line to have nodded and growled "Stalingrad" ;D
The conspiracy theories might get a better start at the next World Cup, with the arrest of England captain Bobby Moore for theft...

Brilliant - never heard that before - but as a good Scot - I take a very dim view of England winning anything.(insert smiley face!) , so I've never really beent that intrested in 1966 and all that ! - good story tho'!

;DWonderfully unbiased the Scots: we don't care who beats England... Yes, we find that very babyish. If Scotland were to compete in some international sporting event in which England was not taking part, then the vast majority of English sports fans would support Scotland in that game. Incidentally, I have been told that one of the German goals in the 1966 final was offside, although I don't have a copy of the match myself, and was only very lickle when it took place......

Heh. It's like how they remember all those Scottish defeats of England, like Bannockburn, Bannockburn, Bannockburn and Bannockburn. ;-)

Look here we are in Scotland , we've got scenery that is among the best in the world, Scottish inventors laid the foundations for Britians industrial greatness, the we created the greatest alcholic beverage known to man, - we have Oil off out coasts - and look who we get stuck with as neibours !
Please guys - Lighten up , england outnumbers us 10 to 1 , you have the bulk of the industries , and wealth - so please allow us the odd moan - we like you really!!
However some of the anti-english sentiment does get a touch annoying - the SNP, (Scottish Nationalist Party), started protesting regarding he amount of time lavished on the English victory in the Ashes test series - that's childish and insulting -one of the greatest sporting compitions I've ever seen - and they get grumpy because England won - fools!t
