Why was the LM flown on Apollo 5 legless? I read somewhere that this was done to fit the LM onto the vehicle, but surely the S-IVB stage of the Saturn IB was the same size as that on a Saturn V? Why could it fit one and not the other, or was this not actually the reason?

My recollection was that it was combination of things. The legs were not needed for the test and could only cause a problem if they didn’t deploy properly. It saved money.

The test was to check it's flight abilities, not it's landing ones, the legs weren't needed so they were just excess weight that would require more fuel to lift.
